i don't own any apple shit except for an old black and white ipod, but my impression is that the processors in these things still aren't terribly great. not going to be the best platform for hosting plugins and shit, let alone being the ringmaster in a sequencing situation.

but maybe it's getting faster. dunno.

Fruityloops mobile will be coming to Ipad and Iphone soon. I saw what appeared to be a little demo on Youtube and it did seem kinda slow. I think maybe Ipad would be good using a parred down sequencer it seems. Probably needs another 3-4 years before Ipads can be used as proper music making tools in their own right.

i'd totally agree on the plugin/audio front however you dont need a lot of cpu power for a midi sequencer being a shitty 8bit signal

I'd be dubious about a solid midi clock however apple do get shit like this right imho so i think its only a matter of time before we get a fully blown sequencer with performance functions (my mpc looks worried)

Yamaha are bringing out a full on tenori app so i'm wondering if its fingerpainting over buttons is the way forward as long as the midi is solid (only 1ms lag apparently)

At the moment, something like this would be your best bet - http://hexler.net/software/touchosc (I'm using the Android build). Though it still needs your 'puter as a host...

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

You actually don't need the above device. you can run midi out too with the usb camera kit and any generic midi in/out device.. I have yet to test mine with my olde oxygen 8. (Audio in too, with any standard stereo audio usb adapter)

Back in the 1990s I was making music on an amd k6-200 so I find it difficult to believe that apple's dual core 1ghz chip isn't capable of running decent daw and MIDI software right now. Par example in Sunvox tracker on my ipad I can run shittonnes of fx and tracks at fast tempos (for precise editing) with nary a hitch..

The major issue isn't the capabilities of the device.. it is that the platform has really yet to take off. Most of the audio software for it truly sucks donkey balls at this point. There isn't even a decent .wav editor available at the moment that isn't crippled in some irritating way (although Hokusai, coming soon, looks good). Most multitrackers don't even support basic shit like volume envelopes or zooming in enough for precise editing. It's a waste.

There are a few ok audio apps tho (jasuto pro modular, beatmaker 2, sunvox and various fx processing plugins) that thanks to the audiocopy/paste standard you can transfer your audio between them to get the job done on the road..

BTW FL Studio mobile==big letdown. It's a music toy for cycling through presets, currently. No sampling abilities whatsoever.

Anyway if I run across any useful midi apps in the future, I'll post here.. most apps i have right now support midi in for triggering events with a keyboard, not sending midi clock signals.

iPad midi in/out has been out since december, i would have thought someone would have made some nice touchyfeely groovebox style external midi sequencer by now

I just want to now if its time to get rid of my tenori yet?

maybe it is...

this is why I started the thread however I've done a bit of digging and found that the iPad can't sync to anything hardware MIDI wise or put out a stable midi clock of sorts so my silver baby is safe for now

plus having buttons to guide your fingers in solo mode is something I can't see working well with a flat touch screen
