That thing sucks and mislabels some things.

I remember looking at that like 10 years ago.

this also it misses out on a lot of albums considered to be essentials

I just found this site a few days ago and thought it was pretty well done. Did it you get it from that Reddit thread where people find websites that they forgot?

Not sure what it matters that it doesn't list every album or song you might think are essential, it's only to show the different genres of music, not play your favorite songs. I remember getting to the area where Xtal from Aphex was given as an example(forget which genre now..) and hearing the first music example, thought "This is probably where SAW85-91 would be classified under." Sure enough. Xtal was there. Got me convinced he knows what he's doing anyhow =p

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

When it was made? almost 10 years ago? of course it seems mislabeled and stuff, but c'mon, today with the sources we have it's easy, not back then. Maybe someday he'll do the 3.0 version :whistling:

No, I remember it being just as bad the first time I saw it.

Yeah pretty much - The first version was released towards the end of 2000 (took ages on my dialup :whistling: ), but the version currently on there is 'only' 6 years old, being released near the start of 2005 ...

It introduced me to loads of artists back in the day. Looks well dated now of course, but back then it was a pretty fun resource.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

I first came across this about 5 years ago when I was just getting into electronic music. It's a pretty good guide for people who aren't too familiar with the genre, but he definitely comes off as bias when describing specific genres he doesn't like.

It's a good intro, I like the commentary on the opening page (drum machines, the "origin" of electronic music is hilarious)

The rundowns of house and jungle are excellent, and I give him credit for doing alright in covering "downtempo" instead of "electronica." In retrospect (it'd been years since I read this) it redeems pys-trance and goa but man, there's just too much of the trance and hardcore sub-samples. Much of it's terrible and it appears to be his niche. It's too bad he didn't update it, the layout is clever.

Also, notice that he derides 2-step/UK garage (the origin of so much good 140 bpm music) and spends little time on glitch and IDM. Perhaps that's why he never updated.

The descriptions are lazy and there is no ultimate way to map the evolution of genres, but there are still some nice track recommendations.

AND NO APHEX TWIN IN IDM? OMG IRRELEVANCY!!!

Yeah in ambient techno is Xtal and in drill&bass 4. Also some stuff from Luke Vibert, Autechre, BOC, there.

The guy seems like a total elitist, but the samples are nice and help give me a taste of different styles of music I otherwise wouldn't have listened to (like Italo Disco, which I'm really enjoying right now).

Thanks! And that totally blows away Ishkur's effort. Brilliant layout.

Yeah I have to give him some credit, I feel the same way about certain genres he highlighted. He also seem to call out the almost irrelevant nature of "electroclash" by lumping it under "synthtron." But holy fuck is he obsessed with all of the shitty micro-genres of hardcore and trance. And it's even a bit outdated for 2005.

I'd love to see a WATMM guide.
