From that video - literally for the very first five seconds I was thinking 'Yawn, it's gonna be some pseudo random glitchy triggering of physically modelled instruments for the whole song isn't it?', then suddenly awesome kicks in

That track is awesome. But I loved pseudo random glitchy triggering of physically modelled instruments in 'O' too. Though I doubt it was random.

Oval does have a sound of his own and is a very nice chap too

pretty cool but honestly i felt like he went everywhere he could go already with this sound on his last album and EP. Still sounds nice though, after such a long hiatus i guess it's too much to expect him to move on to a new toolset only a year later. 'O' was definitely the best work i've heard yet primarily using physical modelling synthesis. I'm still about 85% convinced those sounds are mostly 'Tension' the built in instrument in Abelton live, if someone knows of one that sounds similar let me know id love to check it out

I've made some similar sounds in FL studio's built in Sytrus. It's a FM/RM synthesizer with 6 operators. Similar to FM8 so I guess you can make very similar sounds in FM8 too.

Both O and this song are so much different than his other albums. The early stuff was so dark and atmospheric, while this stuff reminds of the music in that short film "Neighbors" put out by the National Film Board of Canada. And that shit was 50's electronic music.

Not necessarily a bad thing I guess, but I do miss the old stuff. 94diskont remains my favorite album by him, Shop In Store is a masterpiece. Regardless, I'll give this album a chance.

i miss the old stuff as well, but not that old i'm talking more like Ovalcommers and 'So' era Markus Popp that stuff to me is pure gold as far as listenable experimental/noise music goes.

I love that chaotic approach to his old sound where the sounds are almost borderline jarring but somehow they manage to evoke strong relaxing emotions. The new stuff even though it's still heavily focused on sound design sounds less alien to me. (and i mean alien in a good haunting way)

edit: im also not a fan of the drums he uses, they sound way too like indie rock production style drums for my tastes. Luckily though they arent as cringey as the drums in the last 2 squarepusher albums

I suspect, that he uses something like BFD2, to complement conceptually his physmod guitar sounds.

i like the new sound but really miss his old glitchy madness style, regarding the rare trax, he used to relase like 3 or 4 bonus trax on many japanese releases, so its very good news !!

Only ever heard 94 Diskont and Systemisch as Oval, as well as _snd and Model 3, Step 2 by Microstoria.

Will be checking out O and seeing if I think I'll preorder this. Those graphics look pretty awesome.
