After recently signing on to reboot one classic TV show, Hanna-Barbera's The Flintstones, Seth MacFarlane is taking on another iconic TV series, Carl Sagan's Cosmos: A Personal Voyage. Fox has greenlighted Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey, a 13-part docu-series from Family Guy creator MacFarlane and late Sagan's original collaborators – his widow, writer/producer Ann Druyan and astrophysicist Steven Soter. Envisioned as a successor to the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning original 13-part program, which was hosted by Sagan, the new Cosmos series will be hosted by renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. Underscoring MacFarlane's commercial appeal, Cosmos will air on Fox in primetime, something pretty unprecedented these days for a science documentary series on commercial American television.

i mean on the one hand, it's on fox.

on the other hand, seth macfarlane can get away with anything on that network.

but on the other OTHER hand, i hate seth macfarlane.

but on the other other OTHER hand, Neil deGrasse Tyson. that motherfucker is awesome.

so yeah. i don't know. a 13 part documentary about the nature of space, time, and the universe, and it's on fox. during primetime. brought to you by the creator of family guy. on fox.

will we actually make it to 2013 to see this?

It will be just like Cosmos, except instead of being about space & stuff it will be about farting & references to things from the 80s.

that was my first thought too. seth macfarlane doing a bad carl sagan impression and making fart noises.

and yeah it seems like he's just pulling the strings? neil degrasse tyson will be the host, ann druyan is involved somehow... i dunno. it's just so weird.

With the huge amounts of money Fox threw at MacFarlane he has pretty much license to do whatever he wants. I hope they don't dumb down the new Cosmos series. I've found that the American shows about space are all about the pretty graphics and how awesome and wild space is and has very little actual science. Prefer the BBC documentaries about the same, although the latest Wonders of the Solar System/Cosmos with Brian Cox was very much him standing on things and looking profoundly at the horizon and neat photography with not so much content. He did however explain entropy quite well.

I'm sorry, but none of this makes any sense to me. They think this will work because the star wars specials were popular? wtf.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

yeah american stuff tends to be CGI PLANETS EXPLODING BECAUSE THEORETICALLY THIS HAPPENS AND FUCK IT IT MAKES GOOD TV.

edit: and yeah gocab i am so, so confused. though azatoth is right, fox literally throws money at macfarlane to do whatever with, because whatever he does is inexplicably popular. the cleveland show is one of the least funny things i have ever seen in my life (spoiler alert: THE JOKE IS THAT THEY ARE BLACK) and yet, popular.

or MacFarlane's career has been a plot to lure in viewers and a popular media empire with LCD 80s reference comedy so he can get some informative science programming into prime time.

u jelly?

I'm so jelly sometimes I cover myself in peanut butter & attempt to smother myself between two giant slices of white bread.

But really it's more his track record:

-cartoon about fat people falling through tables & stuff from the 80s

-cartoon about the government being dumb

-cartoon about how black people & talking bears are funny

-documentaries about SPACE

But who knows, maybe he makes for a better science show producer than comedy director.

i watched an episode of the cleveland show last weekend.... It was shockingly unfunny.

I say it will be interesting for 2 episodes, go downhill for the next 3, then be axed midseason or moved to a graveyard slot. Or maybe not.

Tyson has a very different style to sagan. And i don't think that you could call it a sequal. Just a do-over with updated information.
