Yamaha RX-5

Sounds like a pretty groovy Drum Machine from what I've been reading and hearing. It can do a shitload compared to its contemporaries and has a bit of a swag to it!

Someone is selling one currently on Ebay for £350 which compared to what the 707 seems reasonable but no way I'd buy one for that price. Visually they don't look as cool as a 707 but they have a vibe about em I gotta say.

£50 I think is what I'd be prepared to pay.

I had that thing. I think I bought it for $65 ten years ago.

It's easy to read about the features and think it's the greatest drum machine ever, but in the end it didn't sound great and wasn't fun to program.

Maybe there are some cartridges out there with better sounds?

Ugly? You guys crazy? I think it looks AWESOME. Then again I'm going through a pretty serious 80s phase at the moment.

i've heard this called 'the darth vader drum machine' and 'the wedge'. i think it's seriously awesome looking.

i've seen these going for around $100 - $200. pretty cheap. but this was a couple years ago. maybe they've gotten trendy or something.

edit: this looks cool: circuitbent version

I bought one 4 years ago for 50 Euros and it was a pretty standard price, no one is (was) giving shit about them. can't belive the price changed that much. Just be patient, dunno. The stardard kit is nice. the snare is amazing. All 12 bit sample rawness :spiteful: It aims at a "real analog drumkit". Make sure it comes with a second cartridge. I also got the jazz one, marvelous! Also there are the metrasound kits 808 and 909?? supposed to be very good but hard to get. I wouldn't pay to much for it, altough its a nice piece of gear, all in all.

STOP BUYING ALL THIS SHIT GEAR PROMO.

well, you haven't actually bought anything yet so I'll let you off, but like I've said many times - there's a reason it's all cheap. save your money and get something of better quality that will be infinitely more useful.

I almost bought this drum machine years ago but when I tried it the pad didn't work, so I just leave the drum machine in the pawnshop. That said, I have a Yamaha RX21 & there's absolutely no difference between using the real RX21 or samples loaded into FruityLoops. Except that I can do much more in FruityLoops programming wise...

jesus whats wrong with a 50 euro drummachine ? everything is redundant, why should you buy a 909 ? for the 4% analog authenticity no one hears ?

exactly, all these ROMplers are totally redundant now. for some reason Promo seems hell-bent on buying them all up.

well, you've spilled it now, so there's no use for my master plan, and i may as well post it for posterity:

1) buy cheap rompler

2) sell to promo for markup

3) profit

yeah it's not £50 though, that's just what he wants to pay...

it's redundant because you can get the exact samples used in it and arrange them in whatever DAW/sampler you like. all your getting with most ROMplers is a plasticy interface, you may as well gut the thing and just keep the casing as some sort of post-modernist art.

I'm well aware the things can be circuit bent etc, but you know what? everything that's circuit bent sounds shit.

Nonsense. What "exact samples" are you taking? Just the PCMs? Because then you can arrange them to your hearts content in your DAW but it will sound different. It's maybe not your cup of tea but the signal path in the rompler has an effect on the sound.

Or maybe you're talking about sampling it after it's been through the rompler's synth engine? In which case you have a sample set that you can do things with but then you can't re-program it at a level below that which you sampled at.

Also, you maybe don't like the interface of a rompler but that doesn't mean you can't do interesting things with it. Example would be when I program something through the interface of my Morpheus versus programming it with Sounddiver. I tend to come up with different sounds.

It's all about having options and not being dogmatic about how you use things and how they sound.

Not really hell bent lol. Just perked my interest that was all 'cause I like the sound of the 80s digital drums. I was hoping they were going for about £50 in which case I may have bought one of course 'may' being the operative word. Anyways yeah I appreciate all this tech is superceded but you gotta spend your money on something eh. Besides the kit I've bought this year is minimal and I've already put it to good use and I'm quite picky before I buy something really.
