dr who, the movie featuring paul mcgann.

wanted to see this for a long time... as part of a doctor who season on one of the bbc sister channels, lo and behold it was on this very evening.

personal rating: fucking tripe out of ten.

mcgann as doctor with richard e. grant as his companion would be so fucking hilarious. especially if richard e grant was essentially withnail, and wandered about time and space being overly dramatic while looking for exotic drugs to try.

Actually, Richard E. Grant did the voice of the 9th Doctor (before Eccleston and the new series started) in Scream of the Shalka, a Flash-based animated adventure. If it's still online, it's worth watching as it's pretty good.

I remember watching this when it aired in 1996 - I had hopes they would bring it back as a full series, and was really disappointed it never got past the first episode (for some reason, I cannot think of it as a "tv movie").

Eric Roberts as the master was the worst casting ever, and that dumb asian kid was about as bad.

Like Loganfive said, the only saving graces were the TARDIS console room and of course, seeing the 7th Doctor again after so long off the screen... only to be shot in front of his TARDIS by thugs.

not just the console room, rexy.. the entire gothica/victoriana and the whole expanse of the tardis... really making a point of the whole 'bigger on the inside' schtick.

re the re-appearance of mccoy as the doctor... in the uk, dr who was getting such a tiny budget by this particular incarnation, the mccoy episodes are generally considered to be amongst the least well put together, and mccoy himself is a fairly poor excuse for an actor. he'd probably be quite good cast as some excentric old scottish gent in an adaptation of some twee crap like alexander maccoll smith, but as the doctor...? poor show.

Aye, I'm a big fan of Moffat and Smith - the second half of this season looks to be a real corker!

McCoy is not a bad actor... I've seen him in other parts, and he's also going to appear in The Hobbit as well.

I hear you on late 80's Doctor Who - by the time McCoy was brought in, the show was on an unfortunate downward spiral (I blame JNT (John Nathan-Turner) and his producer at the time for dragging the show kicking and screaming over it's own shark - they refused to listen to anyone about the direction of the show. McCoy had a few good episodes in his two years playing The Doctor, but every one is marred by some silly bits that JNT insisted on - almost like the George Lucas of Doctor Who - started out with brilliant ideas and direction for the show in the early 80's, but by the end, he had essentially killed it.

I never really took to Colin Baker or Sylvester McCoy, and I can even remember as a kid noting a distinct change for the worse in Tom Baker's last season. Occasionally enjoyed Peter Davison's run, which had some good stories but some of the worst production values in the show's history. I think Logopolis is my worst ever memory of Who, but that might just have been because it saw the end of my Doctor (Tom, the supreme Who). And I agree with you JR, JNT poisoned the show until it all but withered and died.

Meh, I'm not sold on the redesign - the heads are good, but that silly stomping is too OTT.

Until I hear a Cyberman say "EXCELLENT" and clench his fist, it just won't be the same.

I've never been overly keen myself, it's the flared-trouser style legs I think. If you google around there are a lot more interesting redesigns that could've been used. I was much more irritated by the Cybus logo on the chest though, hopefully we'll stick with the Mondasian versions now.

Incidentally, there have also been hints of Dalek activity in this series after all. I think I'm the only person who never gets bored of the Daleks.

The Dalek mentioned is most likely a manifestation of The Doctor's worst fears in an upcoming Episode, The God Complex, where he's trapped in a hotel that it's rooms cause your worst fears to become reality.

i watched this when it went out in '96 and i've never had such a reaction to tv/film as i did when old sly got shot. i hated it, i felt like my heart had been ripped out. i didn't watch it again for another twelve years. looking back on it it's pretty rubbish but i enjoy it a lot. now that dr who is a popular ongoing series again it's a cool what-if. as a nerd it's fun to take something small and parochial that you love and teleport it into something slick and glossy and american. presumably RTD was thinking the same thing when he pitched the dr who-star trek crossover episode back in 2004.
