i have a Korg X5D. i think it's pretty much the same deal with more voices/patches. it is not a terribly interesting keyboard, but some of the sounds get pretty wacky if you go really low in pitch. grainy aliasing. have you tried that? other than that, well, i dunno. i suppose it's good for playing midi files. the drum noises are nice, but got boring quickly.... and the synth voices are crap. not much expression in them. the bells and ethnic sitar gong whatevers are decent

it probably listens to MIDI CC messages for cutoff and some other fings. that also might help..... but doing whole songs on an 05R/W probably won't ever end well, i'm afraid

Yeah I agree its not an amazing sound module but when I got it 12/13 years ago for £300 it was the cheapest thing you could buy to get you making music. I think for me making a whole track with just that module is like a challenge to just see where you can take it. Essentially though its best to make your own patches I would say. I think for me why I still use it is 'cause it has a lot of bread and butter sounds that are usable such as electric keys and slap bass etc. I haven't actually made any fresh sounds with it though for probably 10 years mainly 'cause its a laborious process. In 16 part mode the only real editing you have control of is a basic envelope and cutoff.

the MS2000 shares a lot of CC#s with the X5D, and i wager Korg standardized the numbers across many of their synths. so if you have an MS2000, or a radias, or something like that, you can use it for real-time knob control of some parameters like cutoff, pan, etc.

i guess you can squeeze a track out of it, but it's not very rewarding or satisfying. this keyboard is best buried in the back of the mix, adding some drums or bells.
