online games, finding servers

i'm wanting to play quake 2 multiplayer for nostalagia

i see there is still gamespy but you have to pay, game tracker (not sure if you have to pay)

and steam... i really have no idea what steam is, but if it's the same thing do i have to pay?

steam is an online store and a social gaming network and it's good, it's surprising how something so commercial can be so not retarded.

i really doubt you'll find many people still playing Quake II online multiplayer.

i tried finding people that were playing Quake III Arena online multiplayer, and all the servers are just running bots.

Steam has server browser integration, but not for older games like Quake II. the oldest games that Steam supports handling of server stuff is the original Half-Life Deathmatch, Team Fortress Classic...those kind of games.

Quake 2? There is probably 10 people playing it in the world on average. Try Quake Live.

Speaking of connecting to game servers. Battlefield 3 for PC requires that you exit the game and open up your web browser and go to the BattleLog website to find a new server. How retarded is that!?

I'm pretty sure they're planning on keeping it like that. And you have to have BF3 through Origin, which is EA's version of Steam, but less awesome.

nope it's not beta, from what i've read about.

why the hell would they do it, it's an online game so it can't be really pirated, this kind of stuff will put off a lot of people.
