Panning and Stereo Effects

Recommended Posts

First off, do you guys know how to go about spreading a sound across the stereo field based on frequency content? For example, say I want to have the low end of a sound panned harder left the lower it goes and the high end harder right the higher it goes. 1k in the middle, 10k 50% right, 20k hard right, etc. I've heard it on a few recordings lately and think it's pretty nifty. What could I use to achieve this?

Also, what panning and stereo effects do you guys use?

Hmm. I use the multiband stereo enhancer in Izotope Ozone. But you can't really adjust panning for each band there, you can only adjust how wide it is. Anyway it's a great tool and you could achieve something similar by making the right channel delayed in the higher end and the left channel delayed in the lower end, but it wouldn't be the same, obviously. I think what you've heard was just as you said key tracking modulating the panning as it's pretty common to do this. Or no?

I've heard it mostly on guitars and keys that were recorded, so keytracking certainly wasn't involved for those.

I put autopan on lots of stuff. I used to occasionally do tempo-synced hard panning on beats but haven't in a while.

I can't find where to download that one. Try this one http://www.concretef.../StereoBand.zip

Neato. Hadn't found that one. I found a few others that are similar on KVR, but they all cost money and I don't want to be bothered with that.

ya there are a few that work this way. Sonalksis Stereo Tools is also good. It also can do some phase stuff for fattening and adding dimension.

Sounds kinda strange from your description, though the only time I take advantage of the stereo field is for deeper reverbs, or thickening a bassline/synth sound (I hardly ever use panning because I'm OCD about balance - every panned sound must have an equal and opposite sound, usually another take of the same line). Care to post an example?
