Recomend Me Some Monitor Speakers

Recommended Posts

Looking to buy some monitor speakers, my budget is £150 (can you buy decent monitor speakers for £150?) might possibly be able to go to £200. Did a search on EKT, and found these:

But im guessing that something newer and better might be out.

Cheers

thanks a lot guys, my friend has a pair of VXT's and they're excellent, might go for the cheaper krk rokit!:)

I would recommend finding a way to listen to a bunch at once (we have these at Guitar Center/Sam Ash in the states, not sure what your options are) and choosing your own.

I don't recommend the Tannoy Reveals, they are all treble and no mids imo. The cheaper KRKs are a bit "blocky" sounding (freq smear) but if you can get your stuff to sound good on them you are probably doing it right. I need some cheap monitors actually

WoW, The reviews on those look great. People are saying they are more flat with the room tuning than even more expensive monitors like ADAMs etc. I like that it's got an 80hz and 100hz? cut off to review the mix without low lows as well.

Whatever you do, don't touch those Edirols, they're awful. I'm looking at getting a pair of KRK Rokit 5s or the lower end Tannoy Reveal monitors :)

Could someone please let me know what are exactly "good speakers"? Like they're made with diamond that prevents sonic echo and has a 3543431231-to-infinity kbps, or what? Thanks.

I hope you're trolling logakght. Either way, "good speakers" have a relatively flat frequency spectrum, which means that they don't boost or reduce any part of the entire sound. For example bad speakers will have peaks and valleys where snares sound soft because at for instance around 6 khz the range is reduced, when mixing you compensate for that, listen to it on good speakers and can't figure out why around 6 khz your mix sounds too snappy crappy in that area etc. etc. The better the speakers the flatter the frequency spectrum is projected creating a more translatable mix to different setups. "Sonic echo"?/ambiance/natural reverb/frequency phasing and cancellation occurs because of the acoustics in your room not the speakers. Acoustically treating your room properly can make mediocre monitors sound great and balanced. A poorly or non acoustically treated room can make great monitors unbalanced and misleading because even if your monitors are flat your room could be boosting or reducing your low low end/mid low end/low mid range/mid mid range/high mid range/low high end/mid high end/high high end etc. etc. etc. etc...

how does one acoustically treat your room?

I have a set of Behringer Truth B2031A. Do NOT overlook these because they are Behringer. I have had horrible experiences with Behringer products in the past, just like everyone else, but these monitors are wonderful for the price. I paid $300ish USD for mine new, although they were supposed to be refurbs, Musician's Friend's warehouse is in my city, so I got a deal.

But if you can find a set of these second hand, I have yet to hear another set of monitors that sound better for under $800USD. And I've got to compare them against Dynaudio, Genelecs, Anthony Gallo, and even a set of Boxer T4s. Now, they don't sound as good as all the previous mentioned monitor brands, but for an entry level price point monitor, I'm convinced it cannot be beat.

£254 off a website called gak, maybe its a sign?

edit:

£239

I prefer using Thomann, my friend had some bad experiences with GAK so I tend to avoid them.

I haven't heard the 1031A's, I think they are fairly new. The 2031's have been around for a bit though. I've had mine for years now and have had zero problems with them, and I've put them through a fair amount of audio abuse.

I just A/B tested these and I preferred the Tannoy 501As by a long way - played through Pro Radii on each and the Tannoys just sound so much clearer.
