What's a good web design tool for a complete newb

I'd go the blog-type web route (e.g. something like Wordpress). That way you have all the back-end already sorted and you then just worry about design and content.

Yes that's a good idea. I just d/l'ed and installed webmatrix. It generates wordpress sites i think.

hrmm, maybe i should get wordpress directly. So it's all open source, not using the microsoft database. (excuse me if i'm all mixed up here)

It uses an mySQL for its database and PHP for the code so you'll have to check whether your web host supports them (most do). But yeah it's open source ...

First i've gotta wait until this bloody microsoft thing finishes d/l'ing and installing. Man iz so slooww. Hardly good advertising for the value of their product once it's installed. I bet when i go the the wordpress site, it'll have everything sorted and in a couple of minutes i'll be up and running and looking at templates.

Adobe is beta testing a new product called Muse (the beta is free, the end product will not be) that promises "web design without knowing how to code". Might want to give that a try.

A friend of mine sent me this. to me it seems like a cross between inDesign and Dreamweaver. It's simple to use but I haven't dived in it fully.

http://www.squarespace.com/ has been advertised a lot but has a fee. its intended for novices to make shiny modern website stuff. Haven't used it at all though.

i've watched adobe's quality turn to crap over the last ten years or so. i'm dubious

They make it rain (on themselves). They could actually make way more money if they charged 100 bucks for their suite instead of thousands. 1000's more customers.

i must admit my remark is more based in what i went through with adobe premiere over the last few days than any actual knowledge of this web tool they're developing. just obvious shit that makes me say, "did anyone actually test this before they shipped it?" glad i didn't pay whatever outrageous fee they charge for the "adobe suite." and i don't want the fucking "suite" anyways! why do i need another wave editor? i have several. the fuck is adobe drive and why is it larding up windows now? the fuck is cue? jesus christ. what happened to imageready?

 

this is not even getting into flash, which is increasingly becoming the biggest security risk on the internet.

it depends on what you want to do with the web.

 

-if you want a blog, just pick a wordpress template and get a wordpress or ditto for blogspot etc.

 

-check out tumblr, that might be a ticket

 

-anything more complicated and you will need to get into these sort of tools we've been arguing about OR some sort of content mangement system like drupal.

 

-if you just want to post a couple pieces of scifi writing i'd just learn a bit of html and do it in notepad or an old copy of dreamweaver

 

edit: please tell me what you want to do with the web so i don't post some stupid vague answer like that ever again.

It's alright hat, i'm uploading the wordpress template. It'll suit my needs for the time being. I don't want to fk around with something to complicated. Millions of websites, can't be wrong.

I was just thinking about the same thing, watmm solved it for me. Not sure wether to pick tumblr or wordpress though.

If you just want the site to be a depositary of interesting things you've found with the occasional comment then go tumblr, if you want to go a little more fully fledged webbles then go wordpress.

I think I'll go tumblr then. I just need something simple to post photos and shit I make/take, both music and maybe some drawings. Just a blog with little to no words, but it'd be nice if it didn't look like a cunt.
