YEK
Quote Quote i have a midi keyboard that goes into my rm1x and then out of the rm1x into an emu mophatt hopefully the keyboard will play both machines i want to record into sony acid (i have a mixer and an audio interface) i'll be mostly making patterns on the rm1x and then recording them into acid does the rm1x need to be connected to the computer with midi or does having it and acid at the same tempo fine enough while recording? if they should be sync'd how exactly do i do that? Hi You need to connect your midi keyboard into your computer, then out from the computer, with added midi clock, to rm1x, otherwise the sync will drift a lot, a lot of manual work required to put it back to tempo ??? for the record: my keyboard (midi out) rm1x (midi in and out) mophatt (midi in, out and thru) tell me what to do. PLZ! BCM
You need to first decide which is to be your master from which all the timing comes from. I would suggest your computer/ACID. You want to be able to press play on ACID, and have your RM1X start remotely at exactly the same time and stay in exact sync while it's playing it's patterns. You also want to be able to "play" the RM1X + Mophatt with your MIDI keyboard. So if you haven't got one you need an audio/MIDI interface for your computer. It must have MIDI IN and OUT ports. Plug the interface into your computer via USB/firewire/whatever it is. Plug the MIDI OUT from the computer interface into the MIDI IN on your RM1X. Plug your MIDI keyboard into the MIDI IN on the computer interface. Connect the RM1X MIDI OUT to the MIDI IN on the Mophatt. OK that's the MIDI connections done. Now you need to connect the audio up. Connect the AUDIO OUTS of the RM1X and Mophatt to the AUDIO INS on your computer interface. Now comes the tricky part - making it all talk to each other. I suggest getting the manuals for your RM1X and Mophatt in front of you. Also get some help (Google is your friend) about how to use ACID to send MIDI Clock and sync with other equipment. Basically you need to tell ACID to be the Master Clock source - to send timing signals to everything else, and your RM1X and Mophatt need to be told they are slaves (lol). You will need to look in the manuals about how to set up the RM1X and Mophatt to receive MIDI Clock and sync to a Master Clock signal. Usually it's very simple - just a matter of going into the MIDI menu on the machine and selecting "master" or "slave" in one of the options. You also need to tell ACID to listen out for MIDI note data coming from your keyboard then send that data straight out to the RM1X and Mophatt so you can play both machines with your MIDI keyboard. Haven't used ACID in years but you will need to go into Preferences and Options and probably tick and un-tick lots of little boxes until it starts working. Setting up MIDI to sync to external equipment usually requires lots of head scratching, clicking and un-clicking options, finding sub-menus you never new existed and generally getting quite annoyed. You only need to do it once though and once you have mastered that first time, it becomes easier to understand the whole process. Sounds like a lot of hassle, but it's so worth it and you're never really going to be able to make good tracks without having your gear all synced up together (OK I'm generalising here, I'm sure there's people who do). You're never going to be able to get accurate timing by setting the tempos all the same, trying to hit play at the right moment and hoping for the best. Amateur hour. I would suggest doing a lot of research on Google into the basics of MIDI Clock syncing, and setting up Master and Slave devices. Try and get an understanding of what is is you are doing when you sync things together. Understand the difference between MIDI NOTE information and MIDI CLOCK - don't worry about MTC (MIDI TIME CODE) at this stage. So yeah, get plugging in.
