Need new computer speakers

Recommended Posts

right now i have jbl alien speakers and harmon karden soundsticks. i have the jbl's at home in a modified mid-century stero cabinet that my original homeowners left for me. i am in the process of redoing my sunroom and it has a mid-century feel as well. these will be out in the open so i want some decent looking and of course good sounding speakers that i can hook up to my network via an airport. any suggestions?

don't think it's watmm's field really, i bet most people here kinda skip that "computer speakers" area and either sport a high quality headphones and/or an amp+quality speakers

there's variation in that area too. some people have weak audiophile stuff (me), made of wood, some take it to crazy levels of amplification with equipment that doesn't even have volume control and is made of concrete

true but i would think someone has a good recommend for decent speakers. maybe i should have asked for an ms paint of speakers instead.

I highly recommend Audioengine, especially the A5s, which are basically active near-field monitors tweaked to be room speakers, but which are pretty fucking great in either role, and which sound amazon.

Plus, really great customer service. http://audioengineusa.com/

edit: also, you can plug an airport express right into the back; there's an outlet just for that shit.

Edit: Please don't get "computer speakers"

i used these for years, came with my ibm aptiva in 1996... they were pretty good for their size. 15 years later, i'm still using the double-ended 3.5mm cable that came with them.

these days, i'd recommend getting some behringer truth b2030a's. they're active-powered, so you don't need an amp. you might want a mixer though, otherwise, you'll have to rely on your computer for volume control.

they're linear frequency response studio monitors, so unlike normal computer speakers, there's no whacked-out EQ curve to worry about. also, they go louder than you can imagine.

now we are talking guys. thanks. I guess in retrospect I shouldn't have put "computer speakers" in the title

You need a decent headphone amp or some dedicated studio gear to drive the HD-650s properly.

Speaking of which, i need an headphone amp. Any suggestions. Maybe i should go to a different subforum though.

I actually just use a first gen Apogee Duet: covers me as a (really fucking good) DAC, headamp (plus out to the A5 monitors), and I/O device for recording, and it sounds wonderful. It's OS X only, though.

I use a Xonar Essence ST(X) PCI(-E) card card to power my HD650's. Sounds great.

It's also the output for my cheap but ok M-Audio AV40's. I'm thinking of upgrading to some of those Audioengine monitors.
