Live Trees

This

forest is enclosed. A misty uneasiness is present, making you anxious

for reasons beyond now and us. You are driven to search amongst the

swamps. They are thick with pungent algae and lie underneath mossy trees

that reach down to you, beckoning breathlessly. You rebuke them and

continue to search.

You

search for something old and trapped within each man and woman since

the beginning of time. Some foul archetype that encompasses the

darkness, the hunt, the outdoors--made from the cobwebs of old memories

given life through foggy genetics. It is a dream and a memory that

haunts us as children and eats away at us as adults because of its

unsettling familiarity.

You

search for something between the crippled trees and ponds. You search

with violent persistence, knowing that you will find it. And when you

finally look up, you see that there is no night sky, no stars or clouds

or wayward moon--only black stretching beyond the ancient greenery. A

shiver rattles your chest, as does a fleeting sense of comprehension.

You keep searching.
