From some time in August to late September, I was having nightmares every night when I went to bed, and waking up extremely stressed and disturbed from it. I improvised this ambient piece on my JX-3P with lots of reverb at around 3-4 am, putting off and dreading going to sleep, since I knew what would happen when I went to bed.

this is just a simple little tune.

For a couple weeks, I tried to make a short song every day to try and improve my production skills. this one is the first day.

pffft, fine. I posted a few random tunes from my hard drive on a whim, as I usually keep things completely to myself, but was hoping to get some feedback...

Guess I'll keep on keeping stuff to myself then, if having my tracks go public does nothing other than nullify them for future use and make me feel dejected.

edit: also if you have a short attention span, only the first song is ambient.

Come on, you shouldn't think about stopping to make others listening to your stuff just because nobody answered that time. Also, these tunes are very short so maybe harder to comment.

Anyway, I haven't anything especially to say about the first one because, I don't know, I can't really get into ambient unless it's in the context of an album. The second one is cute and make me think both about Twin Peaks main theme and the interlude tracks Ceephax made for United Acid Emirates. I enjoyed the third one way more today than I remember I did yesterday, and yeah, kind of regret it's not longer

that first ambient one is amazingly rich in the beginning in the low end. i do my best ambient work as solo improv pieces like this one. definitely informed by nightmares. but it is almost in a positive way, like showing the essence of fear without being afraid. i really like it. feels fresh. just think you should do a pass of EQ and take out some of that peaking, unless the actual recorded track peaks, in which case i reluctantly forgive you.

the second one is pretty delicious, like some type of flash animation about living on the moon in a hut and nitting cute little aliens.

and i'm going to have to agree with cryptowen on the third one. i like the philosophy of recording a little song or 2 each day. it is an amazing thing, as i often go days and days without touching my studio, thinking of it as such a far away prospect, to actually record, but if i force myself to sit down i usually come up with something that i learn to cherish and fall asleep to at night.

GOOD WORK GANUS! YOU WILL LEAD US OUT OF THIS CLOUD OF UNCERTAINTY AND SADNESS!

I OFFERED YOU DEEP & INSIGHTFUL VIEWS

But actually for real those are totally the kind of thing I'm into nowadays as far as electronic music goes. Under 2 minutes, getcha in getcha out, every single note & beat feeling like it was left in for a reason

lol

thanks all

sorry for bitching

At the time I intentionally limited myself to about 30 seconds so that I could focus on the detail a lot, as that's an area I need work in, but I have been considering expanding it now that I am done with my little song a day thing (for now.)

It would probably actually be really helpful to expand it, because I also need a lot of work on making songs that are standard length. I haven't made a song for years that's been longer than 2 minutes or so. Problem is that I have actually gotten really good at sketching out really short little loops, concepts for songs basically, and then I get stuck making them real songs.

Yeah, I should probably do some EQ if I ever intend to do anything with it. The peak distortion is artificial if I remember correctly, as it was intentional. The thing is, I have been listening to a lot of Leyland Kirby & Caretaker lately, and in a few songs he keeps the peaks pretty maxed out, and so I was kind of thinking along those lines making it, and I thought it would add some extra darkness to it.

you don't have to if you don't feel like it. what matters is that you feel like you've managed to express yourself, that you've put something from you into it. length doesn't matter.

That's right. I think I have a little problem with my tracks because I always want to extend them as long as I can in order to "exploit" all the melodies, sounds, etc but in a same time I'm afraid to death about repetition so I sometimes end up with something both long and varied but which somehow lacks of direction. That said when I feel I succeed it's quite cool.

Just to say you just shouldn't listen to me when I speak about length

that said, I don't think it's unreasonable to wish that third track would be longer because the theme with that acid bass and little melody just tease your braindance-head ears and then it stops after 30 seconds so its a bit frustrating :P

i mean, a lot of acid artists back in the day would just take that 30 second section and copy and paste it(even if it was made analogue, just record it for twice as long). there is nothing wrong with that. as the artist you are stating that it is meant to be listened to for that long. just add a different lead line and move the snare around.
