Honest Jon's released last year a compilation called Shangaan Electro for which I have no comments except for endlessly salivating at the magnificent cover artwork

Here's the watmm thread about it

They are now releasing a set of 12" remixes by Actress, MMM, Old Apparatus, Demdike Stare, Hype Williams, Rashad And Spinn, R.P. Boo, Ricardo Villainous & Max Loderbauer, Anthony “Shake” Shakir, Peverelist.

Disclaimer: I have been told that troon is MIA / on a sickly leave for a while so I'm temporarily assuming his duties and asking you to read, post the upcoming youtubes, contribute the Actress interview link I can't find right now and add your producer-speak on this stuff.

Is it worth buying?

Are they stealing music from the Africans?

#occupyHonestJon's?

#occupyAfrica?

Are We Are The 1%?

This stuff comes off the same way that juke does to me (sonically boring, cool for no reason, high cheeze factor, just plain awful.)

However, someone that takes influences from this stuff, could perhaps make something good out of it (also like juke.) Some of those remixers could prolly make it interesting.

This is kind of how I feel, though slightly more welcoming of it than I am juke. But I don't think I could sit through the entire compilation without getting a bit bored at times.

But yeah, that being said, Honest Jon's remix series is a really awesome way of expanding the listener base of this music and accompanying the comp.

Some label did an equivalent thing for a band called Konono N.1. I ignored the stuff until I saw the name Shackleton in this

I couldn't sleep for days because of the excitement and now I think being familiar with African music is def a producer superpower.

I might have the wrong impression completely. But juke seem to be to be something that evolved from an already specific sub genre. Where as this shaangan electro is more like a new beginning.

Interestingly enough, Konono N.1 was a group I immediately enjoyed upon hearing—not sure why that's not the case with Shangaan electro.

Shangaan Electro sounds cheap and plastic.

I'm not familiar with Konono N.1 but you can tell from that remix that their music is made by happy humans.
