Drake - Take Care

Hey well personally I really enjoyed Drake's first album, despite all his ridiculous tendencies it was one of the best albums I got last year and one of the only times I've been able to move on from throwback rap and pre 2000s hip hop.

 

New album leaked this weekend. When I read there was a Jamie XX produced track I had high hopes but it turns out he just used the beat from one of the Gil Scott Heron Jamie XX tracks and it is a bit weak. It hasn't developed very much at all from Thank Me Later but I wouldn't have tried to either.

 

I sort of like him even though he's quite probably a complete prick, and his mate Noah who does half the beats is a fucking wizard.

but yeah rap has always been populated by the most spurious of arseholes, and it isn’t 1992 anymore no matter how much I’d like to deny it. I don’t know why people react so much worse to emotional self doubting semi-misogynist rap with autotuned singing than they do to wildly unrealistic violent misogynist rap with gunshot sounds edited over it. I know it's not 1992 but is it too much to ask to want rappers to actually rap and to value wordplay, and for the beats to not sound like fucking euro dance/trance/whatever?

I'm kinda pissed about the Jamie XX + Gil Scott track being ripped off and labelled as the title track w Rihanna feature. Drake is gonna get so paid off this and Gil will be rolling in his grave. XD

Wordplay works for some people, there are plenty who get by fine without it. Maybe it’s not ‘real rap’ then, it all seems a bit defunct to me. I don’t really see the eurotrance thing at all but whatever.
