I'm looking for some deeply emotive "neo [or not neo]classical" music like Richter's. Not happy or classical Mozartish or whatever.

I've researched some myself, but I would love to hear your suggestions.

I'd give Dustin O'Halloran a try - he did an album called 'Lumiere' recently might be just the sort of thing you're after:

He's also party responsible for 'a winged victory for the sullen', that came out a month or so ago and is an amzing album.

bumping.

interested in this kind of material, though lots of sub-strains seem to get lumped into one another. richter, johannsson and o'halloran have a habit of adding electronic instruments into the texture, and the compositions are in some way modern without stepping too far towards anything dominated by electronics. similarly with nils frahm's 'spaces' album last year. surprised that some stuff actually manages to create a great new direction that some label 'neo-classical', but which is more like an offshoot of indie sensibilities of the 90's in it's approach and ideas that goes with the orchestral / piano sound as an upfront characteristic.

i've looked around at a lot of things but wonder what else heads towards that kind of edge to the ideas, rather than being too much like background music that drifts but doesn't commit to melody or structure. some stuff like that has appealed to me to some extent, but it has to be like a puzzle that is subtle enough to be harder to figure out, but not rooted in limited releases in nice packaging, cassettes, and all this overpriced object fetishism that has no real identity in the music itself. i quite like 'olan mill' in places, when it's recorded well, especially.

anyone add any more recommendations to look into?

Alexander Scriabin (non neo) and Nils Frahm are worth checking out.

Too lazy to post yt links at the moment but make sure to listen to Scriabin's 'marche funebre'.

Oh and Ludovico Einaudi, although he borders on sentimental kitsch sometimes but so do Richter and Frahm imho.

Check out 'Le Onde' and 'The Planets'.
