beerwolf
Over on the BoC forum there's a corking track featuring the trademark blends of percussion and sitar Perhaps some of you could post some tracks that you are aware of? Modern or classical, new or old. For years I have really loved this sound but never knew where to start. Guest igloos unlmtd
A good place to start is the Darjeeling Limited soundtrack - it features a good collection of music from old Satyagit Ray films including Jalsagar (the music room) - an awesome movie w/ a fabulous soundtrack by Vilayat Khan. I also like the soundtrack to Charulata (A Lonely Wife). While I love classical indian music I find the soundtrack music to be more appealing because its structures are more 'pop'. However, I do love a good sitar raga now & then... & again I recommend Vilayat Khan whose compositions are very moving. It is well known in indian classical circles that Vilayat & Ravi had somewhat of a rivalry... Nikhil Bangerjee is also good & kind of blend of the Ravi & Khan styles. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8eaAW1_r3A http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVeZMXpmHE4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6ZXjVUez7k Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/69953-indian-music/#findComment-1693026 Share on other sites

Been waiting for this thread for a while! I am actually a sitar student of the Vilayat Khan style. My teacher took lessons from him for several years in India in the 60's, and I have had the wonderful privilege to learn from him for going on five years now. Definitely agree that Ustad Vilayat Khan has extraordinarily captivating playing, and I would consider him to be the greatest sitarist of all time, but I suppose I am a little biased. More than anything I would highly recommend anyone interested in him find his legendary 50-minute recording of raga Yaman - an extremely complex and controversial release at the time, it revolutionized the role of sitar in Indian music and changed the way people thought about raga form. A couple other excellent players in the Vilayat Khan style: Budhaditya Mukherjee: [youtubehd]UJUkPj-E5pw[/youtubehd] Shahid Parvez: [youtubehd]QHk3za_FGDk[/youtubehd] Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide NI64's signature Hide all signatures wow Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/69953-indian-music/#findComment-1694124 Share on other sites

Mind-you Victoria Falls is really worth a trip, perhaps best visited from the Zambian side these days. Apart from the good old U,S of A what places do you care about?
