This is wonderfully strange, what's so important about Black Friday?

I just had to explain Black Friday to a couple of guys from Europe. Pretty depressing. A real America Fuck Yeah moment.

Basically it's when Christmas shopping begins, and for one day there are big sales on items. Everyone wants these items so people camp out and kill each other to get them. It's called "black" Friday because it marks the time of year - from now til Christmas - when retail companies operate in the black. The rest of the year they operate at a loss.

It's also Buy Nothing day (thanks Adbusters), and tomorrow is Small Business day, which is way more jbc.

I always kind of assumed it was called Black Friday as a semi-ironic commentary on the mindless violence that traditionally occurs at the stores that participate in this kind of thing.

What about this new Cyber Monday thing?
