eBook Readers

Recommended Posts

Alrighty guys, I know some of you gents must have sucked up a fair amount of information from ebook readers. What do you think I should get? Kindle Touch? Nook Simple Touch? One of those Sony ones?

Note:

-e ink is preferred.

-Lower price is better.

-I intend to get a large portion of my books from...other sources, so I'd damn well better be able to read them on this bitch.

read an actual book ffs, wtf is wrong with you? bound paper really bogging you down? just such a pain in the ass to turn pages?

oh right, the only reason people read ebooks....is because we're told it's like way more convenient and stuff.

*pan back over civilization....focus on lame asshole reading an actual book...*

kindle kicks ass. they're cheap, there's loads of free books available for it, and you get the nice features of: having hundreds of books & anything you've highlighted in them available to you everywhere you go, being able to look up any antiquated or strange academic word you need in your choice of a couple dictionaries that come installed w/ kindle, and on top of that, you save all sorts of paper.

fuck the haters, kindle rules the night

also, the people above me in this thread are likely the kind of people that would have scoffed at the printing press because it devalues the knowledge :cat:

Like others, I was opposed to the idea at first. I did quite a bit of research and ended up with a Kindle 3. With the e-ink display it really is just like reading a book: no glare, no viewing angles, no eye strain. You can adjust the font sizes to your liking and the built in dictionary, which is probably my favorite feature, is integrated perfectly.

When the Kindle Touch was announced I was able to return my Kindle 3 in exchange for it. It's amazing, especially with the $99 price tag.

When/if you get one, be sure to use Calibre.. makes managing your library very easy.

how does that budget kindle/kindle touch handle pdfs with images and stuff? i dont give a shit about the colour or whatever, but it'd be cool to have textbooks and stuff all in A MACHINE like that

also seriously anyone who whines about THE WAY BOOKS FEEL or SMELL or ARE MORE CONVENIENT is a fucking idiot and needs to be punched in the stomach.

I recommend the Kindle 3 over the new kindles because with the keyboard they have a longer base for you to grip which puts your thumbs at the right place for the page turning buttons. If you could find a refurb Kindle 2 I would also suggest that, its much nicer to hold and the page turning buttons are way nicer.

The new ultra dainty small little things and oily smudge touchscreens are fiddly diddly and wanky. Get two 3rd gen's while they are still in stock and one 2nd gen before they vanish forever.

reading books on ipad is pretty convenient (screen emits light. can read it in bed in ridiculous angles with lights off).

and then when on train trip or something, can carry iphone (no carrying books or ipad or anything) and continue reading where i left bookmark on ipad.

yes. having both ipad and iphone means i'm an apple fanboy. but it has its perks (read above for example of perk).

lol sup :(

they should make a "FinalScratch"-type of book-reader. so you'll get an tablet with 200 pages, all made out of real paper, and on these paper pages there will be text rendered from the pdf that you want to read. and then you do eveyrthing you do with a regular book like scratching, rewinding, flipping multiple pages at the same time.

also there should be a small oil-burner inside that burns aroma essences of certain books, depending on what your reading.

that's the one place where kindle falls short, imo. because you have the ability to change text size while you're reading (and clearly teh screen is fixed), image formatting doesn't work so well.

however, textbook pdfs on a tablet of any sort are amazing. i was lucky enough to have someone gift me an ipad they didn't want, and i've loaded it with pdfs of my textbooks... no longer do i lug around 25lbs of overpriced textbooks that have to stay in pristine condition to be sold for more than $5 a few months later... i get free textbooks that i can doodle in without harm on a tiny tablet that is connected to the internet and feels like the future.

luddites gonna ludd, but i <3 gadgetry

I fucking hate reading on anything backlit, especially at night1. Instant headache. F.lux makes the computer slighly better at night, but I wouldn't be able to hang with an iPad for serious reading sessions.

when i use the kindle app on my phone i find it much easier on the eyes if i switch the background to black and the text to white.. but i like the kindle device the best. e ink is nice. i use to own a kindle 3 and regret selling it. going to get a 3g touch pretty soon. the keyboard on the 3 was ok but really awkward to use at times. i suspect the touch screen will make it easier to navigate..

I just got a Kindle keyboard on black friday...

I love it...

For under a hundred bucks I can swipe rare out of print books from the internet and surf the web on any 3g network or wifi hotspot for FREE... it also has a primitive mp3 player...

The browser it very weak but fine for checking emails or basic facebook functions and google maps...

rfeally? They are aesthetically pleasing to have neatly organized and stacked all around the rooms...the different colors, authors, constantly reminded of ideas and good little passages you once encountered....its like a vinyl thing...some people just like to have the physical media for aesthetic appreciation.

That said, i COMPLETELY understand why people would want an e-reader...moving is such an extra pain in the ass when you have tubs full of heavy ass books.
