foresense
man I love that kind of stuff. have you seen the midibox projects? they have various projects that use old synth chips like the SID or OPL3 chip as engine. http://www.ucapps.de/ check these sammich synths: Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide foresense's signature Hide all signatures Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/70327-preenfm/#findComment-1705638 Share on other sites
Guest kokeboka
I'd love to give DIY projects a try, but I'm a little concerned I might destroy all the components... I went through a phase of trying to build DIY guitar pedals two years ago, and pretty much failed to make a single working one without having any idea as to what I did wrong. I think there might be something wrong with my soldering technique (I learned mostly through youtube anyway). I'd get loads of these if I knew I could assemble them properly, I love building stuff. ryancolecreate
this looks badass. this + mpc1000 = porno kit. These small synths are fantastic for playing out live. I posted on the forum to see if I can buy the PCB and IC components loose from the whole kit. everything should be pretty easy to find locally, and the enclosure would be also pretty easy I think. ryancolecreate
that's sweet. Sounds like he is working on a step sequencer for the second firmware release. I've been digging in the code a bit on github, and it's pretty intense shit. I can follow it, but I doubt I could modify much. He's very pro. This has gotten me thinking a lot though, as the microcontroller he used is really similar to arduino, but way more powerful. It seems like it much be easy to build a sampler or midi box pretty easy. i was imagining a hardware box that could do generative midi shit like the VST in that thread about Autechre's setup. ryancolecreate
Just got the PCB, and he was nice enough to throw in some switches, encoders and a bunch of other parts. :) I hope to start on it here in a week or so, but my wife is due to have a baby pretty soon so it might not be so quick haha. ryancolecreate
so I finally got the board put together and making sounds. I didn't order the enclosure, so I'm working on a sheet metal variant that I'll have CnC'd here locally. I plan on giving it nice wood ends too. :) I'll be blogging that hopefully. Maybe even sell them as kits. We'll see what I have time for. :D Babies are a bit time intensive. The preen is awesome though! A tiny bit lofi, but has tons of modulation capability which makes it super flexible. Sound is great too once you figure out it's character a bit. Program changes are super fast, sends and receives CC's and NRPN's which makes it great for integrating into a sequencing setup. I might sell my CZ-101 because of it. :o I like that synth, but it doesn't save patches which is a major bummer.... ryancolecreate
The Preen just got a lot cooler. The vst sits in the daw, and sends the preset (or even just the last state when you saved) out to the Preen. Fully automatable from the daw, etc. Sweet! http://ixox.fr/forum...php?topic=221.0 On the bad note though there are no more Preen kits to be had. D: There has been a lot of hinting though that there might be a forthcoming FM module made for the Shruthi-1 or the new box they are working on. That would be badass. Preen + Shruthi filters! awepittance
goddam, that sounds awesome. can you trigger different patches at the same time using different midi channels? I'm highly interested in this method of making stand alone hardware devices, i just feel hugely behind the curve. With a little bit of reaktor and a very small amount of programming knowledge, how would one start out by implementing an idea like this? After all work was done, i had to resolder some parts to make it to work properly. For example screenboard, then knobs and buttons and then DACs and path with LP filter after them. Rest is really understandable and comes easy. All calcualtions (floating point, unlike PreenFM v1) in this unit are made on this presoldered CERB40 plate: On 1/12/2014 at 12:47 PM, John Ehrlichman said: good work man Thanks! It is mainly Xavier's merit by the way. This unit is really wicked. It has one of the best interfaces for FM-tweaking. After fiddling with this UI i look on my TX81z (even with really usable selfmade zero sl mk II control surface template) like on jail. Yeah. No, PFM2 runs thru its L/R audio outputs driven by 12bit DACs. You can use L/R as 2 separate mono outputs. In this case 4 PFM2 instruments (it is 4 parts multitimbral) were sequenced by Renoise via USBMidi. Each instrument was routed to L or R as mono — one for bass and another for everything else + echo. Then whole mix was sent to soundcard inputs and recorded. PFM2 was noisy because of not really good USB cable Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/70327-preenfm/#findComment-2117671 Share on other sites
kausto
Since Xavier resumed a development a bit and made a few firmware betas with new features like microtuning (it supports scala now) and note scaling i decided to experiment with PFM2 as only sound source + Renoise again: https://clyp.it/ubu0slxg 4 instruments of PFM2 sequenced with Renoise + automated ValhallaDSP stuff.
