MULLED WINE > EGGNOG

Recommended Posts

stick your eggnog up your arse. what is that, some sort of egg/milkshake? no thanks! mulled wine is the festive drink of kings.

at the weekend i concocted the following which was described by one lucky participant as "the best mulled wine ever made". (of course they were pissed at this point, after many bottles consumed) ...

1 bottle £5 californian merlot (warm, berry and sweet, vanilla base works well for mulling)

8 shots of poire william (pear liqueur/brandy mix)

handful of cloves and 2 cinnamon sticks

1 orange sliced

4 tablespoons of sugar.

heat in a pan and drink from an earthenware goblet like a medieval ruler!

if you have recipes to share i will be highly likely to try them over the festive season.

what do you call it there?

i had some nice traditional Glühwein (glow wine? brilliant) with a shot of rum at a german christmas market last week.

we call it "boiled wine" (vin fiert), but it's exactly the same thing

but surely you don't boil it right?

So maybe it might be better if they called it "Scalded Wine" in Romania. Or at least if you boiled the wine and then spike it with a shitload of Palincă afterwards.

Port wine is about the closest we get to a traditional christmas alcoholic beverage over here; it doesn't really have the festive connotation of mulled wine or eggnog though. I've tried mulled wine a couple of times and I liked it a lot despite not really knowing what goes into it - I might try making keltoi's recipe this christmas. Eggnog is a complete mystery to me, though.

no, we just heat it until it's hot

wiki says most other european countries enjoying mulled wine call it "hot wine" or "heated wine".

well there's an English tradition of marinading the Christmas Stilton in Port. pretty nobody ever does that though. just having port and Stilton is pretty common.

Mulled wine is good. My best experience was at the Christmas markets in Frankfurt and it was damn cold out. Warms the cockles well. It tastes fucking awful if it starts to cool though. As bad as weak squash.

Haven't tried this mulled cider stuff but hear it is delightful. Eggnog can fuck right off.

Port ftw too! Another festive beverage popular in the keltoi household. Me and my dad always stay at the table after xmas dinner and polish off a nice bottle while the womenfolk watch shit soaps and eat chocolates.

+ Chen are you wearing a toque?
