Using a Sustain Pedal for Kick Pad?

Alright guys my sister has an Alesis Performance Pad and I want to get her something so she can control the kick drum. The pro route will cost about £70 but then I'm wondering whether a decent sustain pedal would do the job? This is the one I'm looking at. Thoughts welcome. Cheers.

Try it once and you'll understand why it doesn't work well.

On the other hand, it does work a little better as a hi-hat pedal, especially the piano-style ones that have a harder spring.
