Specific Awesome Moments/Things in Move Of Ten

Recommended Posts

Yeah, so please tell me where the cool shit (tracks, transitions, specific times, etc.) in MoT is and in what way they are cool. I want to like it, I really do. Help me see the light.

For the most part it felt sloppy, simplistic, underdeveloped, too much like half-assed remixes (especially when you consider the typical Autechre remix treatment!), monotonous, uninspired, and just plain old boring. On the plus side it did have more clarity than a lot of other Autechre, but this is just the other side of the simplistic coin.

At this point I like the first track the best because it's audaciously ridiculous while still being pretty cohesive and it's definitely not boring. And that anxious reverbed out chirps are pretty sweet. I thought it was the dumbest thing they'd ever done when I first heard it.

^^ basically this is how I feel about it too, first track is great and also I like y7 because of the sounds, but even that lacks the transitions/awesomeness of most other ae stuff

other than that I have to say its the weakest ae album ever, ep or not

Did you dislike Oversteps too?

It definitely wasn't my favorite, but I wouldn't say I disliked it. It's obviously carved from the same stuff as most of MoT, it's the same aesthetic territory. Put simply, I didn't love Oversteps but I I felt like I got it, and I appreciated a lot of the ideas even if the end product wasn't as easy to wrap my arms around as anything released prior to it.

I don't feel that way about MoT. It starts with a bang, descends into wank territory pretty quickly, and basically stays there right up until the end.

That video really does make M62 shine lol

Standout tracks for me are rew(1) and cep_puiqMX. Contrary to the others they're beefy, and don't sound like discarded Oversteps tracks (no border, ylm0, iris was a pupil) though the latter is actually Oversteps worthy IMO.

The others just sound awkward and, like many have mentioned before, downright boring (pce freeze 28i, nth Dafuseder)

But yeah, rew(1) and cep_puiqMX are my favs of MoT.

I can't get on with nth dafuseder at all, it's those off-key flutes - for me it's one of the only ae tracks I find genuinely unlistenable.

There are some good tracks on MoT, but I agree it sounds like a bit of an afterthought. Cep Puiqmx is probably a favourite, but it doesn't seem to have anything in common with the other tracks on the EP as far as a I can tell.

Some months ago someone posted a video of these guys doing some really abstract pop and lock type dancing while walking down the street with this playing in the background. It really brought out something special in that track I hadn't heard before, almost made it feel like one of those massive, mind-bending Kubrick scenes. I haven't been able to find this video since and when I listen to the track without the video, it really falls short of that feeling :/

This.

Rew(1) is one of those tracks I like to play very, very loud. It's the dirtiest, futuristic hip-hop tune Autechre ever put out.

cep_puiqMX on the other hand is to me an introduction to r ess - I don't know why but I always felt like MoT was meant to be played before Oversteps.

Then...M62 is like a recreation. Some beautiful tracks up there too - thinking of ylm0 and iris was a pupil.

But again, it just doesn't work as a whole to me...

funny, but that sounds like you're describing quaristice, not move of ten.

theres nothing half assed about quaristice, quaristice gets right everything that MoT gets wrong. quaristice is constantly changing and creative and funky and always exploring different sounds, while MoT largely repeats the same sounds and in a boring-as-hell way. You may not like quaristice but don't tell me you are bored by it

when i listen to ae i want something thats dirty and funky but also changes into something else 5 times by the end of the track. I could list at least 30 other ae tracks that are dirtier and more futuristic

Quaristice did feel very off-the-cuff and improvised. But on that token I felt like there was a sincerity to that, which was replaced by a restraint that sometimes bordered on pretense in Oversteps. Like the rugged noisy edges were replaced by twinkly filigree, the following alleys, doorways, and tunnels to see where they lead was replaced by this sometimes solipsistic fantasizing of an imaginary world.

I often really like these feminine types of sounds but it was alienating for me coming from them. I didn't hear a lot of muscle from the 2010 releases, neither in the rugged sense nor the hand-wrought imperfection sense of the word.

This one?

as a collection of songs Moves of Ten is great. however songs like "Ylm0' and 'iris was a pupil' to me just sound like outtakes from Oversteps and totally destroy the flow of what could an otherwise very cohesive AE album/ep.

edit: i forgot No Border also sounds like a very sega genesis infused Overstep outtake as well

edit2: for my money fi they cut all of those songs out it would be a better album than Oversteps

i can kind of get on board with that, the opening track is my favorite of MOT so i can see it heightening the intensity a little too soon only to have it drop off as the albums fades into more of a hybrid between what MOT could have been and an oversteps overflow

WATMMoment, oscillik, I want to make sure I'm not missing anything. Besides you are the one who's so sure that everyone who thinks it sucks is going to love it by the time the next thing comes out which we will then be whinging about. Whinge Whinge Whinge
