Got a Roland PX-50 for Christmas.

Recommended Posts

Sounds good but it is literally my first Hardware Synth I have ever gotten. It was a hand-me-down from y sisters boyfriend who coincidentally listens to IDM/Ambient and makes music as well. He though I'd make better use of it then his garage. What do I need/how do I set it up so that I can use its sounds in PC programs like Ableton or Renoise?

I have to get a USB to Midi cable since this was made in 95 but anything else? Would taking the Headphone out and plugging it in my sound card work? Do I use ASIO from there?

I have only used VSTi so any advice would be great.

I'm off to my dentists appointment now. Will be back.

headphone out will most likely be really noisy. The best option would be to run the mainouts into the soundcard.

looks like a cool synth! Dl the manual and go to town. :)

Is this it? Set your DAW to send MIDI in all channels, then hook your soundcard up to the MIDI input of the XP-50. Headphone outputs are stereo and noisy, be mindful of that when you're hooking it up - as slightlydrybeans says, you're better off connecting main outs to two separate inputs on your soundcard. Record the audio making sure it's not too quiet and not too loud, and that's it. Stick a guitar pedal in there if you're looking to try new things.

Your sister's boyfriend rocks, btw.

That is it Kokeboka. Thing is my sound card only has an Aux in and Optical in then 4 aux outs and one Optical out.

I was going to get a 1/8 to 1/4 inch adapter plug that in to my Headphone out from XP50 then plug that in to the Aux 1/8 in of my Souncard which is a Titanium X-fi Sound Blaster.

Then use the Midi in/out to connect to my PC from USB.

My soundcard doesn't have two separate aux inputs but the XP50 has a L and R out.

I'm basically trying to figure out what I need to buy to get this baby working with my PC.

Well, you have a few options: a) collapse your XP-50 to a mono signal and feed it to your single input; b) get a cheap new soundcard with 2 analogue ins (with MIDI, which would be a useful upgrade); c) record in two passes (first out L, then out R). If buying new gear isn't an option, maybe you can judge case by case whether you need to record a stereo image or not - if you're tracking your average bass sound maybe recording L is enough, but if you're doing a big spread out pad with reverb it might be worth recording L and R in two passes. It's time consuming, but it keeps you from spending money.

I'm assuming your aux in is mono; if it's stereo you'll just need adapters to make it happen.

It is a stero aux thanks for the input. Got the adapter stereo an aux stereo and midi to jab. Hope that'll do.

How do I get ableton to record it? I can hear it on my PC and my midi works in Ableton but I can't figure out how to record it.

First time using it.
