Chicagoland

Recommended Posts

so I am in Chicagoland for 2 weeks visiting friends...im new to the area...what should I do?

PS Im not going to the Sears Tower as I heard its ridiculously expensive.

Any good places to eat? I saw an ad for a traditional Dim Sum restaurant...would love to have dim sum for breakfast.

Any good parks?

Apparently I am near Bucktown and there is a bohemian/hipster/artsy fartsy area in Damen? Any cool places there?

I know there are people here from Chicago or have traveled here quite a bit. Lend me your thoughts on any and everything Chicago.

go to chinatown for dim sum. phoenix is really good and really popular.

you're here the wrong time of the year to really explore any parks, so i wouldn't bother, but you should definitely wander around millenium park in the loop if you've never been there before, and there's free outdoor ice skating to boot.

go to the signature room lounge (john hancock building) if you're interested in the heights, it's free to go up and it's on the 95th floor, so you're all good and at least you'll be able to enjoy the view with a drink in hand.

Yeah i mean it's not like the greatest thing ever and if you're a douche about getting THE CHEAPEST REALEST BESTEST vietnamese food then no, but the service is good and the food is good. better than ok, but not mind blowing.

Be sure to go to Hot Doug's and, if you dare, Kuma's Corner.

If you want Korean, San Soo Gab San and Cho Sun Ok are supposed to be very good.

yeah reckless records is pretty badass. though apparently they have another new store branch near Millenium Park.

went ice skating today, was fun as hell..and i was way better than i thought.

lol Deep Fried, don't tempt me ;)

i should be in that Hancock bar on Thursday afternoon with a couple of friends.

no one with me eats meat though, so they aren't pulling for Korean...Im gonna sneak out and eat alone if i have to.

Ive also been told I need to have a nice bowl of borscht...anyone have recommendations for that?

All in all, Chicago is pretty awesome, even in the dead of winter.

Deep Fried -- I've heard of that place, but never been. It sounds badass!

No meat-eaters? Well fuck that! You're fucked. You can't even go to Big Star and get a carne asada taco. :(

Mana Food Bar on Division is a good vegetarian place. And Avec is one of the best restaurants in town; you should be able to put together enough veggie sides to satisfy all there.

Did you skate downtown or at the rink they set up by Wrigley Field?

Finally, go to Powell's on Lincoln Ave and ask to see Jung's Red Book. You might have to show your pen0x, but it's worth it.

Come on - I want vague generalizations about Chicago met your expected stereotypes.

well, i can generalize more after a few more days, but it certainly is windy....the winters are overrated...everyone kept telling me i was gonna die from the wind chill, we had a 5 degree day with wind chill a day or two ago and it was fine. wtf chicago.

im pissed about the meat thing, trust me....maybe ill sneak out to try that taco.

ive been introduced to jimmy john's, which is like this midwest version of subway cept their bread is way better and they have the perfect amount of mayo on their sandwiches.

ill talk more later...going to some place at N. Damen for sushi!..though I got a bit o' a cold so I just want some soup.

Shit that reminds me,....authentic japanese ramen...where? I want now.

encey: skated right underneath the Bean...beautiful cityscape!! it was a shame I spent most of the time looking down trying not to fall...but after an hour or so I was skatin pretty fast without the need to shoegaze.

1. This is a late Chicago summer, not a Chicago winter. You have no idea.

2. I can't believe you came to Chicago to eat Jimmy John's. That's like going to New York City to eat Subway.

3. If you go to the Hancock building and want food afterward, go to the food court on the 7th (I believe?) floor of Macy's, where you can get a dick-splitting torta from Frontera Fresco or whatever it's called. Seriously, it made diarrhoeaea come out of my dick.
