You crazy? These players weren't/aren't at their pinnacle when they moved/move to foreign leagues. They're going for a pay-cheque, yes, but a new lifestyle too. Playing in a slower pace and weaker environment will grant them to opportunity for more free-time whilst still making shit loads of money and probably lengthen their career.

Maybe Beckham went to America a little too early. And Robbie Keane's just a shit. But even Pele played in a shitty league in the last years of his career. Lots of players join indoor masters championships and it's not a lesser-quality of football in places like South America.

The best footballers are paid insane amounts and pampered and surrounded by assistants and wealth. But try training (all weathers) for 6 hours, 6 days a week, 8+ months a year (almost 11 months a year during international tournament years). Then do that from the age of 16/17 to 30+. Throw in injuries, legal enhancement drugs that will probably make you shit liquid for a week every month, maybe bad press when you fuck up in a game or get caught trying to be a real person by going out drinking with your mates.

Fuck, I think I'd want to go chill out in a easy league, get paid a shitload and experience a new culture too.

Edit: Oh, and a strict diet. Nowadays everything a player eats has to be managed. No sauces. A lot of a players meals will consist of boiled white meat and plain pasta.

The MLS has gotten a lot better in recent years, it's not like it used to be in the late 90's. Granted it isn't anything like a european league but their rules envolving squad registration are strongly geared towards developing american youth players anyway. Every team has 1 designated contract slot (ie high salary cap limitation), which they usually use to attract a big name from Europe. Veteran footballers are a smart choice, because the rest of the team can benefit from their experience.

Indeed. Plus, the life of a celebrity can and has been recorded as very tiring, even emotionally damaging in some cases. So Henry is walking down the road to a shop, how many would recognize him in New York v London? Not to mention the paparazzi...
