Sony pulling out of home game consoles?

Recommended Posts

rumors are coming out of CES that one of the 3 major players will call it quits on the home console market. with Wii U already being shown, and Microsoft already confirming their next console, it looks like Sony may be the odd man out. I can see how this makes sense, PS3 division took it in the ass for several years b4 turning profit, failure of PSP to overtake the DS in portable market, the PSN breach probably caused by Anonymous.

Sony might be rethinking their mission, abandoning LCDs and Playstation in favor of the PS Vita and ending the Sony Ericsson partnership after the failure of the Xperia Phone, which could help boost their mobile games, as well as help make up for the disappointment of Walkman MP3 players.

they should sell again PS1.. Oh how I miss mine :(... Also, yeah, at first it was way too expensive to buy a PS3, PSP, etc... Hope they don't quit though, I like them.

you do realise that Sony didn't end any partnership with Sony Ericsson, but they actually bought them out?

the ps3 is probably their best product.

i don't see the vita doing anything to stop android and ios from dominating the gaming market in the near future.

leaving the console business but staying in the handheld market would be a strange choice.

microsoft would seem more likely to pull out than sony, they seem to have a lot of problems with hardware failure.

also, nintendo is probably doomed.

that was my thought. one more console and it's over. ps3 is my favorite, but i'm not much of a console guy. but it would still hurt to see sony drop out.

lol, the only source of this rumor is a cloud gaming service that is basically in competition with PS3, xbox, and Wii.

Meanwhile, Sony has always said that the PS3 would have a roughly 10 year lifespan. I would imagine Sony is just going to emphasize Vita, a new fucking product, for a little while.

yeah I could see them becoming a Sega, publish on all platforms, no need to take loss on hardware. They could still join the cloud gaming scene as it develops.

Sony's always going to be a hardware provider - it's their hardware that has made them successful in the console industry above all others, with perhaps the exception of Nintendo, and until recently, Microsoft. Sony went from a bottom-tier publisher (remember Sony ImageSoft?), to a top-tier hardware and software publisher, and that hasn't changed (if anything, now that the PS3 has found it's stride, it's only going to become more successful) - the PS2, a 10+ year old console, still sold 500,000 units in 2011, with hardly any new software coming out for it.

I think if anything, Sony's going to move more towards delivering their content sans media - the Blu-Ray drive will be for backwards compatiblity, but I suspect their will be a major push to deliver their content digitally with their next inevitable console.

Nintendo should really use the Wii U to gain experience with a true next-generation system, and then abandon hardware altogether (at least console hardware), and finally go the route of publisher. They can easily make great versions of their franchise games for Sony and Microsoft, and even Apple and still make loads of cash. The reality though is they probably make far more money on hardware than software, which is strange considering it's the opposite for everyone else.

Home consoles are keeping game developers from creating more interesting games with better visuals. The sooner they die off the better. On the other hand it would mean I'd need to update my PC far more often than I do now, so meh.

My mp3 mini-disc came with Sony bloatware. It was a wonderful gadget, but I couldn't subject myself to that.

Edit: NetMD... Ugh, that shit was horrific. Worse than AOL.

the latest version of SonicStage isn't so terrible. And with the fact that my MiniDisc Recorder allows bi-directional transfers (one of only two MD recorders that can do this, I believe) it's really useful.

i love my md for sure. i haven't used it in years so all my discs still have the play lists from highschool. it's so nostalgic.
