Over ear headphones?

Recommended Posts

Yo guys I'm looking to get a new pair of over ear headphones for listening and production on my Ipod Touch when I'm out and about. I use in ears currently which are good but want something that's gonna cancel out noise a bit better. I got an old pair of Sony's which are a bit crap from memory and bashed up some what so now want a pair that'll literally cover the whole of my ears plus have reasonable sound quality. I don't want to spend more than £50 and am looking at the Sennheiser HD 202 Closed Back On-ear Stereo Headphone. What do you reckons?

IEMs are probably better for cancelling out noise on your commute than regular headphones, just sayin'

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

Get the AKG DJ headphones everybody has these days. They are closed, over ear and very loud and have a lot of impact.

I've got the AKG K450's, they aren't too expensive and the sound is excellent. Only think is that my head is quite big and they feel quite tight after several hours of wearing them

I got a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro's yesterday, and they are lush. Very warm and full sounding. Completely enclose the ears with a nice velvety pad

omg Justin Bieber uses them

i did a lot of geeky research in to phones and the akg518 with the foam cut away beat almost any other smalish over ear costing double according to headfi.org

the best in ear phones are the soundmagic pl50's which are a steal for balanced armature design at £40ish tho you will need a little eq to bring the bass out a bit

Yeah these are the ones I was talking about.

I also have the Beyerdynamic dt 770 pro - they are amazing! Neutral is a different thing, but they are so good to listen to music. Above all stuff like Andy Stott or Actress with a lot of bass and compression. After listening a while with them and switching to a hi-fi I have to use drastic filters in EQ to bomb the bass up, cause I get so used to that much bass, that normal sound sounds like plastic then. Anyway, thanks for the info, that Justin and me have something in common right now :emotawesomepm9:

  • 5 months later...

For home yes, but for outside nooooooooooooooooooo waaaaaaaaaaaay - they're as open as a very open thing, he might as well wear a sieve !

'DJ' headphones mentioned above is probably you best bet. The noise cancelling ones generally add so much to the cost without much of an effect so just go for something as closed as possible.

And don't get hit by a car 'cos you can't hear it.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

Active noise cancelling headphones sound like shit. Do not use that bullshit for "production."

if you need to listen in loud environments, get IEMs or headphones that passively attenuate noise, by design. If you're using them for mixing, research headphones that are closer to neutral than euphonic. If you're using them for DJing in a club, neutral headphones will probably sound like shit to you, mind.

I use Beyerdynamic DT 770-PRO's (which were already mentioned in this thread) for my production, also modified them with a break away cable about 1' below the cans as I've lost track of how many times I go to stand with my phones on and the chord is trapped under one of the wheels from my chair.

For pleasure I use Ultrasone PRO 900 S's which have forever altered the way I listen to music.

How did you do that with the break away cable? I have the same cans and after a few months of use the cable is already broken at two points. I really don't understand why they produce such high quality cans with such shitty cables. Anyway, I have guarantee for them, but I'm sure it will happen all the time.

well thats a standard question, if you have an hp amp get 250 else get 80, I have them, can't say that I love them dearly, but I prefer them to AKG's, ...my 2 cents...

80, the output to your iwhatever won't be powerful (i.e. loud) enough unless you also have a headphone amp with the 250 ohm ones.

I'd get 80 unless you have enough power to drive the 250.

edit... what mcbpete said.
