hearing aids

so my old man he just got a new hearing implant. it's under development but working quite well. monophonic (not in the least cos his left channel got fked). it's a BAHA, demo of their latest model.

they drilled a hole in his skull and fitted the thingy on it.

he can put 2.5 and 3.5mm jacks in it. listen to audio input directly to his cochlear system.

the future?

hearing a disease is totally the future. i think dogs can hear cancer so maybe it's cool that humans are hearing aids.

i dunno dont those still have pretty low bitrates and weird frequency responses?

i used to work at a place that captions telephone calls for people who are hard of hearing and my boss had a cochlear implant and had slowly gone deaf because of some genetic thing. so he remembered what hearing was like pre-implant and said they aren't that great, but certainly better than nothing. though, this was like five years ago, maybe they rule now.

maybe by the time im an old lady i can be all shadowrun though that would be rad

now he can digitally filter anything out, that's great, notch

complex filters actually.

they compensate for his hearing deficits. quite the design.

a very active subject in audio research ATM and it will stay active long, i reckon

anyway, i read up on his particular model and it's a FPGA thingy. pretty simple (programmable array system with notch filters, indeed) disgustingly simple actually. but cheap. i have no idea how medical commerce works. he's happy--my pop dude made herzog-like films with barely any frequency reponse at all, totally FUBAR. look at him now. i say, it's the future.

this is awesome....you could hook your dad up to some FX, plug a mic into his head, try and trigger him with old analogue gear, all sorts.

edit: expanding on this idea - please make a track out of your your dad and post it asap
