AFX related video.. Synth stuff

Recommended Posts

Remember a while ago the Yamaha CS synth that AFX carved the notes from SAW into went up for auction. Then a while later an EP appeared which reported to have been made exclusively with sounds from that synth (and many, myself included, gave it a proper bashing)

Well, just saw this video interview with the dude who made the EP, shows him flashing the same synth about, generally brown nosing and such related things, moaning about his career failings etc.. Enjoy!

additional warning, contains vile cardigan and excess neck fat frown

(appols to mods if wrong forum, seemed appropriate though..)

Aside from his minor whining about the difficulties of having a dream job, he seems to just be a regular RDJ fan like the rest of us... I wouldn't say he was brown nosing. Good for him managing to borrow the keyboard of his idol. Given that he demonstrates how even such a basic synth can make such a nice variety of sounds, there's probably a parable there too about not buying lots of synths you don't need...

he did buy it. off ebay, i think? he certainly didn't borrow it. he paid like 3 times what one would normally go for, and that's in the UK where vintage gear is really overpriced. so he probably ended up paying like 4 times or more what one's worth or would go for in the US. all because RDJ owned it before.

it's a very basic synth. i think even RDJ came on here and called him a twat.

and thanks for the vid, TechDiff ! interesting, in a staring at a car crash type-way. hahaha :)

im sure im not the only person who's noticed this but i find A LOT of hardcore rich synth collectors to be some of the least talanted and technical (but not artistic) minded people i've come across.

... Um, yes.

Oh he lives in Bloor-West. Cool, it would be neat if I could visit his studio some time.

huh, seems like a nice enough guy, at least he appreciates the fuck out of that particular synth

Well he seemed to be saying that he borrowed it from someone else who in turn won it at the auction. At any rate, it wasn't eBay, it was VEMIA, which is an auction house specifically just for synthesisers. I believe it's run by Peter Forrest (he certainly works there, at any rate), who wrote that neat encyclopedia, The A-Z of Analogue Synthesisers. I believe Peter Forrest and Richard D. James crossed paths on Analogue Heaven way back too, as have several other notable people.

i stand corrected.

but really, i don't think he "borrowed" it. he just doesn't want to admit that he shelled out a fortune for RDJ's old synth. lol

it's like when people say, 'i've got this friend, right, who's got this problem..'.

Quite possibly. Who cares? :)

Haha, I was just trying to be helpful, saying what he claimed. I don't care if he's lying though. Now, with RDJ himself, on the other hand, it would be nice to be able to sort the lies from the truth... this guy, though, I've only heard of as "someone who likes RDJ" which doesn't really make him too interesting to me. Even if liking a given artist was an interesting thing, I can think of two people on here alone that do it with more of a passion and thirst for knowledge. :D

How sick would be it to own that synth....

you can buy your own for around £300, max.

I was referring to this particular, previously-owned-by-RDJ one.

I really don't get the whole celebrity instrument thing, especially when it comes to synthesizers. I wouldn't even want a synth owned by a famous musician, it's way more likely to have been taken to gigs and have technical issues. I'd much rather buy one from some guy who never even used it and just had it sitting in his attic since he bought it.

Also, why would you be so cruel as to carve the liner notes to your album into a poor little defenseless synthesizer?

+1

you really want one that still works! and looks "minty fresh". as opposed to one that is fucked, rusty, scratched, and every single pot/slider is crackly as hell.

It's because people who buy them are rich collectors, not musicians most of the time. Considering the quality of Solvent's work, and his ridiculous studio, he's more of a gear collector/hoarder than a musician as well.
