My dad loves that song, we watched Fantastic Mr. Fox over Christmas and his eyes lite up because he recognized it instantly. R.E.M., U2, and B-52's were all played out a lot my parents when I was really young. Other than that, mostly Disney soundtracks, in fact we had a plethora of "sing-along" videos which ironically I would watch in silence. There a few songs by Pink Floyd and The Who my dad used to play on guitar all the time. My aunt was a huge Beatles fan, and she actually made me know which Beatles were which before I even started listening to them. This is the first music video I remember seeing ever. Zephyr_Nova
My mom had the Beach Boys' 20 Golden Greats compilation cassette, and that is the first music I remember loving: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20_Golden_Greats_%28The_Beach_Boys_album%29 I have a memory of driving around up island somewhere with it playing in the car and singing along with the harmonies. I must have been 4 or 5. God Only Knows, Heroes and Villains, Good Vibrations, I Get Around and Sloop John B. were my favorites, Sloop John B being my very favorite at the time. I had the lyrics to that one memorized. The other music that I fell in love with as a kid (4-7), which I'm less proud of, is the music from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals Cats and Phantom of the Opera. Memory was my favorite song from either of those, followed by that really dramatic Phantom song with the ascending and descending chromatic motif. And of course Michael Jackson's Thriller was also a significant early childhood music memory. The first music that made me become a music consumer and inspired me to become a musician was Guns 'n' Roses' Use Your Illusion I when I was 8. I remember finding that in my brother's cassette collection and listening to it start to finish on my yellow walkman while sitting on the landing floor, reading the lyrics as it played. I decided then that music was going to be my career, destroying my former dreams of being a professional hockey player (lol). Haven't strayed from the path since. Before listening to G'n'R I gave U2's rattle and Hum a try since it was the #1 album at the time, which to me meant that it was supposed to be the best music in the world... which left me feeling incredibly disappointed because I had such high hopes for music. My reaction was pretty much 'how can people possibly think this is the best music?', which to me also meant that maybe I just didn't understand music. Van Diemen's Land was the one song that really stood out for me on that one. But I liked Achtung Baby quite a bit when it came out. I remember listening to that one while checking out Christmas light displays with my family. Basically my childhood musical evolution went: Beach Boys --> Andrew Lloyd Webber --> Guns 'n' Roses/Metallica --> Nirvana/Grunge -->Tool/NIN. There was way too much devotion in my high school years to Tool and NIN. They were both great bands, but it was pretty retarded how much they overshadowed so much other interesting music I should have delved further into. The good part about that is that there are stupid amounts of awesome music from that era that's still relatively fresh to me. The shitty thing is that I can't keep up with all the good music that's currently being made while getting caught up with the great music of the past. Fortunately this means that I'm almost never bored. Hugh Mughnus
First music I really listened to was jungle.... started out with Dillinja, Goldie, Alex Reece, Doc Scott, DJ Dara, Technical Itch, Dom & Roland......... I listened to that and still do.. when I was a bit older like 10 years old (1999) I listened to quite a bit of tech house... James Zabiela mostly. And now it's 2012 and I listen to bleep bleep squiddly bee bonk bam braindance. so I guess ya, age 5-10 I listened to jungle and that's what I remember mostly. And somewhere in all that mix i remember having a Madonna record when I was 4 or 5, and a No Doubt tape (tragic kingdom). I have no idea how those made it into my memory but they're there. lol Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide Hugh Mughnus's signature Hide all signatures On 1/19/2020 at 5:27 PM, Richie Sombrero said: Nah, you're a wee child who can't wait for official release. Guest Diao
My parents bought me a cassette tape that had a few songs/excerpts from the second Teenage Ninja Turtles movie when I was 3. I literally listened that cassette so many times that it now sounds so crappy you would think you were listening to a radio station dialed .1 off the right channel. I had a mickey mouse radio/cassette player that I used to listen to it while I sat on my bed. One of the reasons they got it for me was because I kept getting out their Fine Young Cannibals CD and listening to it in the basement with it on repeat, and I think they were getting sick of it, lol.
