How to crisp up your S's

Recommended Posts

I haven't been the straightest of arrows with my speech from baseline, but now that half the time I talk, I'm speaking to a 7 month-old girl, things are getting out of control fabulous pretty quick. I sound like Perez Hilton. I think I need to work on crispening up my S's and maybe dropping a few octaves. Less nasal too. Anyone have any tips or experience straightening up their speech via speech therapy?

I have a particular problem with pronouncing 'th' properly in conversation. Often the number 'three' may sound instead like 'free'.

Context obviously means it's fairly irrelevant, but when I know where I'm going in conversation then I'll make sure to stick my tongue underneath my front teeth and really nail that 'th'.

It may be actually. But I don't want to so clearly have a regional accent, then. Maybe it's high-faluting of me. I don't want to sound like I'm from the home counties either, but I certainly don't want to sound like I'm from EAST ANGLIA.

It's probably better to drop your S's entirely at this point. Crisp S's would only make it worse. If I was your mother in law, I would have kidnapped that 7 month old of yours. For HER sake!

Nah, it's just laziness. Often, I'll just go with an 'f' sound because I don't want to slow my speech with extra tongue-action. Unfortunately when I do emphasise the 'th' I often follow through with a rolling r and then I sound like a weirdo.
