New Tut: Complex Drums With Ableton's Legato

Recommended Posts

Guest ryanmcallister

Hey guys, I posted a new tutorial video to my channel covering how to create complex drum patterns using Ableton's legato clips. Hopefully some of you might find a useful trick somewhere in there. I also discuss follow actions a bit, and there's a little bit of a live performance in there too. Enjoy:

Good info man. You always have good tutorials, and it's interesting to see how another person's flow and how people can get similar results with different techniques.

Interesting! It reminds me of the "Immediately Play" Next Sequence mode in JJOS2XL for the MPC1000/2500:

I don't have Ableton but I'm going to have to give this a shot on my MPC when I get back to the lab. Thanks for the idea :)

Another great video! This technique is pretty fundamental to my approach, from drums, to fx, to melodies etc. If you really put a lot of consideration into how you set this up, you can do extremely interesting and dynamic performances where you can really play out an organic sounding jam, all with buttons. Great for coming up with ideas and editing further. Keep em coming Ryan!

Also, I'm glad you made the distinction between MIDI and audio applications with this... using it on audio can produce very clean cut up sound stuff, but using with MIDI allows for a more organic interaction of the elements. There is a big difference in say, cutting between drum loops, and cutting between midi loops that are trigger synthesized drum sounds. The decays of a triggered synth drum can tapper off naturally and makes it sound more organic, as opposed to cutting to another sound.
