:zoviet*france: The Newcastle Tour

Recommended Posts

Among the various groups emerging across Europe in the wake of Throbbing Gristle and the first flourish of ‘industrial’ music in the early 80s, :zoviet*france: have remained an omnipresent and mysterious force for over 30 years, accompanied by countless releases and a decidedly enigmatic and unconventional approach to their music and its presentation.

Live appearances are rare, despite a fervent and devoted following worldwide, and latterly have been mostly restricted to European festivals. They have not played in Newcastle since the Morden Tower acoustic show in 2006, so the recent announcement of

the Newcastle Tour has caused a certain amount of excitement in underground music circles.

Working with us here at A Better Noise, they will be performing at three different venues around Newcastle, where the group has always been based. Each show will be different, and there are three varied and distinctive venues being used, a crucial factor for the group.

The first, on 23 March, will see the band recreate their previous Morden Tower performance – a completely acoustic show, no electricity, no batteries, nothing but their unique musical vision. Presented as part of the AV Festival, this will be a challenge to both the artists and the audience, and will be intimate, surprising and unconventional in equal measure, as performances in the tiny medieval turret so often are.

The second, on 29 March, will be the closest thing to a traditional gig, as :zoviet*france: take over the Cumberland Arms, their favoured ‘rock’ venue, where so many legendary bands have played, although this will be far removed from a ‘standard’ Cumberland gig.

The show, on 13 April will be the grand finale to the concert series. The band will play an extended set in the spectacular circular setting of All Saints Church, overlooking the Quayside, and this time they will be collaborating with their favourite local dancers, musicians and performers to produce a seamless performance that will fill this historic and rarely-used space.
