Fucking sick!!

1:45 how do you do that sound?? What is it??

Some kind of a monster bass synth!

Not spot-on and the Autechre track probably isn't even what the designer had in mind, but close enough for me:

Also, chorus.

willing to bet it's their Korg MS-10 + FX.

don't think the Nord Lead had been released yet when they made Clipper?

ae + Nord = post 1995.

I think it actually comes from a sampler. Probably an Ensoniq - EPS, EPS16+ or ASR10 (I think they've owned all three). If you listen closely to the very upper harmonics you can hear the kind of linear relationships you get with PCM/sample playback. It's run through a pretty meaty filter and then that chorus beefs it up too. I think the heft comes more from the signal processing chain than the generation or synthesis method.

Could also be FM synth run through that MS10 filter but I kind of doubt it. Doesn't sound metallic enough.

The Flex set has a lot of this distinctly PCM-sounding stuff too.

true, the Nord hadn't been publicly released until 1995

but who says Autechre hadn't been given access to a freebie development version?

It does really remind me of my Nord though. But then, I don't know fuck all.

I agree, I have a Micro Modular and I think it has a similar flavor. I'm pretty sure that's not what they used, but I would sooner reach for that (stacked pulse waves) or my Shruthi (the lo-fi supersaw with the XOR mixing algo) to get this kind of flavor than try to be a purist and try to recreate exactly what they were doing, which I'm quite sure is sample-based.

yeah, highly doubtful though, considering it was 1994/95 and most people didn't know who Autechre were.

they were still yet to do anything really amazing... imho. :)

does sound like a Nord. also sounds a lot like my MS-10, and they used the MS-10 shitloads on all the early stuff, didn't they...?

..probably until the Nord came out! :)

I suppose you could argue that post '95, and post Nord release, is when Autechre truly became Autechre! haha ;)

When you say MS-10, you're talking about the filter sweeps, right?

no, not just that. i'm talking about the "monster bass synth" sound from 1:45 onwards, including the filter sweeps.

^ like i said above. :)

but of course i could be wrong. could equally just be something processed through the MS-10's filter, like you say... or not MS-10 at all.

sounds very MS-10 (esp. the filter sweeps) and analog to me, though, rather than PCM or sample based.
