Free Real-Time Playable Effects

Recommended Posts

So I'm sure we're all aware of stuff like Turnado, Stutter Edit, Effectrix, The Finger, and Artillery.

What I haven't seen are any free effects along these lines (and no, Glitch doesn't count).

Have you guys run into any?

This is a great question - I've also been extremely curious about this sort of thing, but perhaps have been unable to articulate what I've been looking for. I think what the OP is asking about is if there are effects that allow for realtime sample manipulation along the lines of stutter effects, looping, etc. I.E. "glitch" (although I fucking hate that term) style things that allow you to get the sort of effect one might get from the painful (though oft rewarding), and time consuming process of slicing individual audio files into bits and hand manipulating them, but something you can effect in realtime via midi keyboard or midi controller. (wahrk, let me know if I'm wrong on that).

Anyway - I think a great starting place for this discussion might be the DFX plugins (here). These have been around/available for, like, forever, but still work great and have midi learn functions. Specifically, check out the Buffer Override, and Skidder plugins (although I think everything there is worth a look).

DESTROYFX is so fantastically important... you can push that stuff really far, going in subtle or unsubtle ways.

I would imagine there are many many other effects out there to mess with... I just don't know where to find them.

And they're probably not free. Seriously, Destroy FX is too good to be true.

I would probably pay well for a collection of like 100 different interesting effects. I just need somewhere to start looking, a free site? Mac.

Wow, wtf. I replied to this thread twice already. My phone must hate me, because neither ended up here.

But yeah, I think it's pretty clear what ties all of the plugins I listed together. T35513R's kinda got it, but not limited to just stutter effects. Any effects really. Just plugins that are designed to do more complex things as an audio effect that can be engaged and/or manipulated with a few simple, mappable controls.

I've played with some of the dfx plugins before, but I'll check them out again.
