iPad 3 announcement

dunno, can't stop myself from following the live-blog stuff, there's probably a bunch of iPad fans here at WATMM so why not make a thread for it.

so obviously it'll have a double resolution display & more powerful chips to drive it, which should be more than enough to upgrade from an iPad 1.

So if the invitation tries to tell something, it's hinting towards the hi-res screen. If the "touch" also points towards a new feature?

they are the only company that gets the delicacies of a toilet experience.

Man, I like a fair amount of Apple products, but the iPad seems like the biggest impulse buy of a luxury. I guess I look for computing power, so I don't understand the need for a tablet in the first place, but gotdam that's a lot of money for a facebook/watmm machine lol

Here's the official stats.. quad core and retina display finally. If i can't resist the temptation I might have to sell my ipad2. Nice that ipads don't seem to devaluate all that much.

Being an iPad1 owner, I'm happy about this update and will most likely get one.

Also we can count on all these features headed to Android devices in 3 months.

hope this means the price of the used ipad1's will drop considerably.

I'd love to get one as a gift from some rich benefactor; I'd probably use it quite a bit for recreational media consumption/watmm/email as my laptop ages in an increasingly ungraceful but respectable way, but I could never justify buying one with (a) a reasonably functional laptop and (b) a frigging miniature version of the thing already in an iPhone. A tablet definitely seems like a mere luxury in my circumstances, but I can see where others might find one more critical.

My next major purchase is probably going to have to be a new lappy. And given how well my MBP has held up over the last 5 years of constant use, Apple's probably going to get more than enough of my money. That's the other thing: the obsolescence of iDevices compared to the prosumer apple lines: the OS X stuff is built to last and the iOS stuff seems built to cause you to impulsively drain your tax return [note announcement timing]. Pretty obvious which is the more profitable business plan these days, though.

They also dropped the price of the iPad 2 by 100 bucks. I think it might be time to upgrade from our iPad 1 to this version...

I got an iPad 1 pretty early after they came out, nothing but love for it although I know plenty of people who've bought one and don't really get along with it at all.

I guess it comes down to what you'd use it for, and if it can offer the features and functionality you would need in order for it to do what you'd like it to. For musicians, it's brilliant, so many fun noise making apps, midi control apps etc etc, a brilliant addition to anyone's gear list.

Didn't bother getting version 2 when it came out, didn't seem to be a significant enough increase in power or functionality to merit spending more money on. Sure enough, there are only a very small number of things I can't run on the iPad 1. Also, I really dislike the profile of version 2. The edges are much nicer, a bit chunkier on version 1.

Yeah, some sort of haptics would be ace, Definately removes my one gripe about using touch screens as midi controllers (you can't do it without looking) but the inclusion of anything haptic is pretty speculative at best. Just have to wait and see one that front.

Everything else, increased processor power and better display.. Exactly as was expected, starting to feel like more power would be useful, and a sharper display would be nice. Not sure if either of those things is enough to convince me into splashing out just yet though. Ah well, fingers crossed for haptics, that'd be an awesome step into next gen fun times!

I have an original ipad, and I dont think I'll ever be justified in getting a new ipad, until this one literally stops working. It still does everything I use it for perfectly. Buying a new ipad every time a new one comes out... I can't get behind that.

My original reasons for getting one was musical beyond anything else (multi touch controller), and everything else besides that was a plus. Glad I have one, and happy with what it does for me (esp as a student, the portability for taking notes etc). I like the ideas of tablets in general, not just ipad specifically. Cool tech, but again, I can't see what peoeple NEED the latest version of everything. Like I said, my original ipad is still suiting me just fine.

In the wake of Win8 I reckon the iPad will revert to becoming a niche media controller just like Apple used to be before the iPod

oh yeah btw i would LOVE to get an ipad as a gift or something, just cant justify buying one myself. secret santa????!?

looks like they might get rid of the numbering altogether from now on, which would totally fall in line with their simplicity-to-the-max thing.

i dont think apple ever really referred to the ipad 2 as the ipad 2 except in shorthand for urls and stuff. it's always been branded and labelled as just "ipad."
