RIP Moebius

Recommended Posts

Jean Giraud aka Moebius died this morning. He had a cancer and was 73 years old. He was in my opinion the most important graphic novelist ever. The last books he released were still very original and opened a new perspective for his career. I'm feeling sad.

Nice bird, especially the color. Shitty cancer...

www.petergaber.com is where I keep my paintings. I used to have a kinky tumblr, but it exploded.

Didn't know he had cancer, in my mind he was a true genius. Hard to believe we lost such a creative and influential person today, not many like him in the world.

Oh god no... this sucks.

I'm not into graphic novels at all, or illustrations that much, but I do think that Moebius was quite something.

I just love to look at those detailed messed-up surreal drawings he did.

Those pics are amazing. One of the last books he released "Le Chasseur Déprimé", he incorporated this kind of drawings in a crazy story about interlocked dreams. That was a very good one.

oh man...one of my all time favorites...one of a kind...RIP indeed

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

I was in US tjis summer, and eat in KFC. FUCK That's the worst thing i've ever eaten. The flesh simply doesn't cleave to the bones. Battery ferming. And then, foie gras is banned from NY state, because it's considered as ill-treat. IT'S NOT. KFC is tourist ill-treat. YOU POISONERS! Two hours after being to KFC, i stopped in a amsih little town barf all that KFC shit out. Nice work!

So i hope this woman is not like kfc chicken, otherwise she'll be pulled to pieces.

Really bummed. Didn't see another thread, but I suppose it's related, but Star Wars concept artist Ralph McQuarrie also passed away recently. He literally shaped the imagery and characters of SW from the start. RIP both of them. The world lost two amazing imaginations.

Haha, you shouldn't have told me! I read that book as well, in French. But I can barely speak or read French. So I had all these images withouth knowing what the fuck is going on. To me, that really adds something. Sure, I could tell it's not random, there's a storyline. But I don't need to know it's meaning.

I remember talking to a friend who designed several characters on the new star wars, and him saying that lucas wanted moebius to lead the art direction for the prequels. Lucas wanted to retain all creative rights of course. Moebius was like fuck that. ahhh what could have been...

actually this may be common knowledge, i dunno, can't be arsed to look it up

Lucas also asked David Lynch to direct one of the first three (but he declined).

I just imagined Star Wars, designed by Moebius, directed by Lynch. My mind imploded.

Very sad... I'm not very familiar with his work but clearly a very important and overlooked illustrator.

Not familiar with his work either, but judging by what's been posted in this thread, damn, what a shame. Looks like Tatsuyuki Tanaka got some inspiration here.

Guest bitroast

The Incal, written by Alejandro Jodorowsky, has been recently reprinted as The Incal Classic Collection. It may be easy enough to find, but I'm actually not too sure. There was a limited pressing, followed by a more standard pressing, and I can't work out how limited the standard pressing is.

Anyway. To be honest, the writing completely lost me. It seems a little too drug fucked for me to follow. It's possible that it's actually good and I just didn't get it? The art, on the other hand, is absolutely amazing. Every frame is beautiful, and some of the psychedelic stuff is truly awesome.

If anyone is interested in his stuff and can find this at a reasonable price, then I recommend it for the art alone :)

The Incal took me two or three readings before I started to fully enjoy it. Every time I read it again I enjoy it better actually. Some pieces of art do that to me, The Big Lebowsky being another example.

When I read The Incal first I was quite young and didn't understand why my father recommended it to me so hard, and why this book seemed to be so important to a given generation. For me it was a little bit silly and absurd. Then I've began to reconsider it's absurdity and actually enjoy it. Because it's a very funny and inspired one. It's details make sense to me now.

I would recommend another series of him which is way more accessible and kinda underrated : "Le Monde d'Edena" (The World Of Edena). Although I don't know if it exists in English. Why are comic books so underrated ?

As for your point about drugs, I know Moebius have been into smoking joints a lot. It's actually the starting point of one of his latest series, named "Inside Moebius", where he draws himself as a character interacting with all the fictive characters he has created before. They're all trapped in a mysterious desert. At the beginning of the first book, he explains that he just made the decision to stop smoking weed and that "Inside Moebius" was first supposed to be a comic book diary just for himself, be he finally thought it was good to publish it. I didn't read all the books (there must be five or six) but I will when I'll have the occasion (these little bastards are expensive and they aren't available at the library I use to go).

many of his works were packaged together in a numbered softcover series in the US, though they have gone in and out of print. I have them all, but a few of them I had to pay a bit more for...not sure if they have been reprinted. If I remember correctly there are 9 or 12 volumes, something like that? Unfortunately they're in a box in my mother's attic at the moment...
