Feelings

I figured something out recently. Feelings are meant to be felt, not seen. Especially the good ones. When you're feeling happy, take some time to absorb the goodness. Let it move you, let it shape your awareness, and everything else. But for god's sake, don't put it under a microscope. There's no reason to sit there, figuring out why you feel so good, like it's something you need to understand.

People have the ability to look into things, to analyse them and figure out how they work. It's an ability intended to make our lives better, and its intended use it that we know and understand bad things, and learn to avoid them. Only in times of dispair do we need an understanding of how to change our state of being, so that we can find happiness. But once you find happiness, you don't need to keep searching. It's there. There's no reason to keep looking, or analysing, just enjoy the ride. True happiness is what you feel without even knowing it.

I just drank a can of Fentiman's Full-Bodied Lemonade Shandy, while listening to 'Gradus' by Philip Glass. It was lovely.

It sounds like he confuses 'feelings' in the sensory sense with 'feelings' in the emotional sense. I think Aristotle is right, that human emotions contain thoughts or reasons as part of their content, and are not just what Damasio seems to want to call 'literally "gut reactions"." E.g., anger is an emotion containing the thought that one has been wronged and deserves something retributive.
