Anyone Remember Soundsnap?

Recommended Posts

This is going back aways, but does anyone remember Soundsnap? I don't think I've ever been as angry with a website as I was at Soundsnap when they switched to pay. It was such a fucking great site until then. It was pretty much my favorite site in like 10th grade or whenever, and when I found out that they were switching to pay my heart sank and I was angry for months. I also think it was actually a bad monetary move; they said that they weren't getting enough ad revenue, but I think their popularity was rising. Before they went pay, I saw links to them everywhere. Then they went pay and I haven't seen one since.

Does anyone else have opinions on this? Was I the only one who felt this way?

So you're angry at a website because the owners of it are trying to make a living out of it.

Not really. I felt like the original intention of the site was to make an easy place where everyone could get sound effects and stuff, a site made for the indy sound/film guy. Making it for-pay sort of ruined that, and then they started increasing the prices until it wasn't really even a site for indie producers, just another sound effects/loops site just like the rest of them.

You see, the system was based on user uploads; I actually had a few sounds on there. I thought it was one of the best ideas ever, and they did it way better than freesound.org (though maybe freesouond has gotten better lately, I haven't checked).

They were making money off of ad revenue. They said it wasn't enough, but while I guess I don't know the statistics, the site seemed to be increasing in popularity all the time, so that might've changed soon.

Here's the google trends data for "soundsnap". I'll give you one guess as to when they went pay. If they kept increasing in popularity at the rate they were going before turning pay they'd probably be one of the biggest names in independent cinema. I think it was a pretty bad move. It's had a significant decline in popularity since then, and it gets lower by the day.

It was more popular in the indie film crowd.
