RSS feeds - how do they work / what should I do?

Good evening watmm,

I've been thinkin it's a good idea to start subscribing to feeds and whatnot for uni. You know, to keep up with what's been published in journals. There'd also be the advantage of having all music/tech news in the one spot

I downloaded "Reeder" (seems good ) but I still don't think I've got the hang of how you subscribe because every time I try to subscribe I get a "this xml does not have content..." message or my reader can't find anything.

Two questions:

1. How do I subscribe to actual feeds without just searching keywords and the like?

2. What feeds do you like and would recommend? I'm thinking music, technology and philosophy but I dont really mind?

I prefer google reader. Usually you can jut put URLs into the sub box and it will update when that page updates. Sometimes you can find specific RSS feed boxes that will give you a code. I never really had a problem subscribing, but some pages wont allow it, oh well.

actually, doesn't Reeder require a Google Reader account for it to work?

in your browser you should be able to set the default RSS reader application to Reeder and it should then open the app each time you visit an RSS page, giving you the option to subscribe..

If you set it up right, Google manages your feeds, and Reeder presents them to you in a good looking way.

actually, Reeder is responsible for about 98% of my procastrination time.

you can probably pick out some sources you like and add them manually if you don't want the whole package.. I particularly enjoy http://new-aesthetic.tumblr.com/ from there..

Yep, my Rss 'collator' of choice too. I then have the reader widget thing on my iGoogle page so I gets my emails, news headlines, tube info and feeds all on the one screen.

It's like being in the future. But with more pictures of Pocoyo.

Mail.app > Preferences > RSS

just realized this doesn't help with Chrome. Well, get the feed link, and you can still subscribe from within Reeder. I think it will even monitor your clipboard and ask if you want to subscribe while it's in the background.

I use bamboo with firefox. pretty good, easy to use and customize.

Can't help you with good feeds since i only subscribe to boring ass shit about east asian politics, economics and the like.

I just started using google reader lately and subscribing to feeds from websites I frequent. I haven't tried the following site yet, but supposedly you can use it to make full-text feeds from feeds with just snippets: http://fulltextrssfeed.com/

most companies that have an RSS feed also push that content through twitter. i used to use google reader but now i get the same data plus more via twitter. just a thought
