"Earlier this year it was announced that the late radio DJ’s vaults – which allegedly comprise 25,000 LPs, 40,000 singles and “many thousands” of CDs – would be made into a Arts Council-funded “interactive online museum” called The Space, allowing fans to explore the great man’s collection while viewing his “personal notes, archive performances and new filmed interviews with musicians.”

"Today, it has been revealed that the first 100 records from Peel’s collection will be online as of tomorrow (May 1). Stool Pigeon report that The Space intends to post 100 new records per week, which, we imagine, will take the project well beyond the originally proposed May-October 2012 length."

Well this just got quite a bit more shit:

Update: According to The Independent [via Twitter], the collection will not – as was previously claimed – be streamable.

It will, however, showcase Peel’s meticulous cataloging system he had where, for each record, he would “type out a filing card for every album. Starting in 1969, he made a postcard-sized card for each new LP, and inscribed the name of the album; the name of the band and all the tracks.”

In the words of Sheila Ravenscroft, John Peel’s widow, “Even just within those first 100 records from each letter, I think people are going to be very interested as to what’s in the collection. I think they will be amused and intrigued by it.“There’ll be information about the record sleeve, front and back, all the information about the record itself, as well as whether John rated the album or not.”

“Then out of those first 100, we’ve chosen one artist that we’re honing in on, that we’re going to do a special thing on each week.”

So is this going to be jpgs of index cards then? Would feel incomplete if they don't have a least some audio content. Imagine how much fun it be to get paid to work on a project like this.

There'll be thousands of people willing to do this without pay. A spare time hobby once a week or something. I know I would.

No mention of Aphex or Boards' Peel sessions so far in the Peel Sessions section - the whole interface is poorly done without a proper search. Kinda defeats the purpose of an archive, IMO.

^Yeah the idea is great and the site's neat so far, but I too was a bit let down. Still, a full-fledged archive is quite an undertaking, so in that sense it's still cool, I'm treating it like a preview.

Looking through his records the way it's all set up is tiresome imo. The quality of the pictures of the cards is good though. Maybe when I've got some time I'll have a good look through.

That will need some time though.

Would enjoy seeing the status of the DATS from the Mu-Ziq session as well; 'Green Lanes' is one of my favorites!

I tried to go through the Peel Sessions and was kind of frustrated that they weren't in chronological order and the way they were labeled wasn't consistent.

OH HELL YES - I haven't listened to the µ-Ziq Peel Session in ages, and you're right - Green Lanes is a superb track - pure Mike P magic.

"The New Radiophonic Workshop (NRW) has been established for The Space, the new, free digital arts service from the BBC and the Arts Council that’s being launched as part of the London 2012 festival. Other Space projects include the public streaming of John Peel’s record collection."

Guest Benedict Cumberbatch

i was excited to go see this but i now realize that part of the appeal of peel was his enjoyment/love of the music. without him, just looking at his collection leaves me feeling nothing. for example I am not going to like everything he plays on his show but the fact that he likes it is interesting.

Apparently every episode of the John Peel Show is available for streaming and download on soundcloud.
