Guest Promo
I wanna get a bass guitar one that's especially good for funk. This is my first foray into buying such an instrument. Just wondering what you guys would recommend between £50-200. Also am open to get a secondhand one. Cheers. Guest mrx
If you're just starting out then it really doesn't matter what guitar you get. Any cheap 34" scale squier bass will be good enough to get you started. Guest Blanket Fort Collapse
Squier basses are alright, any bass you get should be setup by a good guitar tech for the right string guage, action, intonation(basses that aren't setup have infamously bad intonation and will sound out of tune half way-ish down the neck etc.), truss road tension etc. A good cheap bass plays a lot better if it's setup by a good tech. I would get an used LTD P Bass. LTDs are really greatly priced and far better than Squiers and most Fenders under a thousand dollars. I'm primarily a guitar player, but I've played bass pretty seriously in a few bands. My bass player just bought an LTD P Bass for $350 US after reading a lot of reviews and it plays better than his $900 Ibanez (which plays amazing) every Squier and Fender bass and pretty much yeah any bass I've ever played for less than a grand. Though if you're playing funk and want to slap you probably want active pickups. Ibanez or LTD can be really good for that on the cheap. Guest kokeboka
Steer clear of the really low end stuff, like the Squier or Epiphone $100 basses. I got my brother a Made in Indonesia Squier P bass for laughs, and the nut was chipped and the neck felt like it was made from cardboard. It's best to get a good a decent second-hand, I love the good Fender basses for that classic sound. I've heard great things of Reverend Guitars, in terms of bang-for-the-buck construction quality and factory setup. They started making basses not long ago, so I'd check them out. Maybe they're a bit outside your price range, though.
