Selling records vs charity shop/goodwill

I've recently embarked on the painful task of working through my records and deciding what to dispose of - there's so much of it that I don't bother with anymore, that it's just not worth keeping them as they're taking up space. My main issue is whether to sell them or just give them away to charity/goodwill. The majority of the stuff that's going is unlikely to garner much in the way of money, and I really don't fancy the thought of a) listing it all on discogs or ebay and then b) sitting and waiting for the slow drip-feed of sales. Another alternative is getting a valuation from a local secondhand store, but again I doubt they'd touch most of it and just offer pennies for hundreds of records. I'm gradually coming round to the idea of dropping them off at a charity/goodwill store. I guess I like the idea that folks will score some fairly good music for a bargain, rather than seeing it all get marked up at a record store and watch someone else profit from my lethargy

Anyone else been in a similar situation? Just tell me the karma boost is worth it alone and that'll seal the deal

Really depends on the records you're selling. I had a huge box of records in the garage I tried selling off and only around 10 of them I ended up getting rid of, even then they only went for a couple of quid. Then again that was largely because they were crap records I bought as a teenager, so I just gave them to a local charity shop, which felt a lot better seeing as they could do with getting some change more than I could. I've not sold off any records I knew were worth something though, if that were the case I'd see how much they're selling for and how much demand there is, then if there's some records that are really worth something, just try selling them off and give away the rest. I've never really seen the point in holding on to records hoping one day they'll be worth something, rather they'd just go to someone that'd enjoy it.

All fine points, thanks. Yeah, there are a few bits that are ebay worthy and perhaps of interest to watmm folks, so of course I'll post up a list here and see where that gets me. A lot of the stuff I'm looking to dispose of is kinda late 90s big beaty forgettable dross or 'chart hit' remixes that were bought on a whim, played once and never touched again. I'm also considering recording a few bits to digital (I've got a decent enough setup to do this), well, anything that's not readily available to buy digitally nowadays...

Do it in phases - list it here or on discogs and ebay, see what sells right away. Then maybe craigslist or something, you might sell a few more. Take the rest to a record store and see which ones they might want. The rest, dump at the charity shop.
