Recreate a WARP / Rephlex Masterpiece

Recommended Posts

I just had the idea of a contest where everybody would try to recreate one specific song of the warp catalogue. Everybody would work on the same song and we could could collect information about the song beforehand like midi notes or what drum machines where used. Sure most of the results would be quite different to the original but thats what makes it so interesting. At the end we can do a poll about the best version. So I would like to start this topic to collect suggestions what song should be used and why.

I really would do a remake of XMD5a but that might be too difficult. What do you suggest?

Yeah, I was sure XMD 5a wasn't on Warp, thought I could have been wrong for a second.

It might be an obvious choice but LFO always comes to mind when Warp is mentioned. In fact, I can't really think of any other choice.

Really like the concept btw, I'd definitely be down to do it if there's enough people, regardless of what song gets chosen.

hehe we could also add rephlex as I forgot that excluding rephlex would exclude analords and the tuss. The Tuss - Alspacka would also be a great track (rephlex too) or what about Surripere by Autechre? Just post tracks you would like to do and I will do a poll later.

I think I could probably do a decent re-creation of Surripere. I'd have to dig up my old granular synthesis experiments though.

I also have a barebone Buzz file of fold4,wrap5's drum pattern/tempo modulation so that's an option :emotawesomepm9:

I would be totally in.

But would we have to be as close as possible to the original track ?? Or could we have some freedom, just the way we did with the Squarepusher cover comp ?

Only if I can do a Maximo Park track

I say we each choose a track if we're gonna do an exact copy. It'd be kinda boring hearing the same thing over and over again on a compilation. Though kinda interesting to hear how each person came to the same conclusion.

Also, I'll try to dig up that buzz file later. I remember posting it many years ago and people were still confused as to what exactly was going on even though I managed to re-create the pattern pretty much perfectly.
