Looking for good metal/doom/sludge *without* ridiculous vocals.

Hi,

For some time I've been looking for some good metal/doom/sludge, whatever bands that don't have the commonly termed "cringe-worthy" vocals that kind of kill the whole presentation.

I'm open to bands without vocals completely (old Earth), and I am familiar with some of the classics that do have nice vocals (Electric Wizard, Sleep), but I'm looking for something either new or bands I haven't heard of before, which I'm sure is obvious by the thread title...

I know I've made a thread seeking the same sort of music without vocals, so maybe this can focus on bands and albums that people like, with an instrument of the human voice that doesn't bother them to the point of shutting the music off.

Even if they do scream or yell, if you like them, and the singing feels genuine, please share it by all means! There's a doom band out of Chicago called Indian that has a vocalist who definitely screams, but for some reason I like and don't mind his voice (a great band if you haven't heard of them before).

This extends to all "metal" forms, sludge, doom, whatever, as I like doom a lot but I am looking for faster, rhythmic bands/albums as well.

I love you all. <^^>

ok, so not exactly sludge/doom - but more post-metal with slight doom and possibly sludgy influences...'Agalloch'

now, again, their vocalist is a tad' cringeworthy at times, but to be honest, it does grow on you and fit the music, which is good enough for you to forgive the vocals anyway

would highly recommend getting the album "Ashes against the grain"

I'm hardly a closed minded nun. Remember, I'm on a fucking IDM forum.... an IDM forum.. Think about that for a second before claiming people are closed minded nuns.

If you can stand yelling vocals the stuff like Baroness, Kylesa and all those Relapse related sludge bands then you should be right. I assume the main issue is that you don't like gutteral / witch screams like you find in black and death metal?

Also, most stoner doom uses Ozzy-esque vocals and has done so since pretty much the 70s so I don't think you'll struggle to find anything.

Try Acid King too. They are great. I think of them like Electric Wizard if the girl from the B-52s was on lead vocals.

You know that only covers a very small, very specific faction of heavy metal right? But I'll let it slide because its easily the best kind of metal.

YES! Torche are awesome.

Also, Textures:

and Isis:

Both bands use screaming vocals, but more as a textural addition imo, rather than pure aggression (especially the case with Isis; I couldn't imagine their music without the screaming). And they mix it up with nice soaring clean vocals.

HAIL SATAN WORSHIP DOOM

uuuunnnnhhhhhhhh!!!

The riffs on this release are fucking killer compared to older material.

OP YOu might like Neurosis too. There are vocals and they are yelled but it's not like a death vox. It's more like a natural yell.

Try this:

Yeah, Neurosis pretty much set the template for post-metal. While I prefer where Isis took that style, there's no doubt Neurosis were amazing. Times of Grace is a beautiful album.

Agree'd completely about Isis having better atmosphere. Though I think Neurosis's best album is Through Silver in Blood.

Sorry, how are cKy doom?

You might like St. Vitus, OP, but one's definition of "cringeworthy" is so subjective that it'd be hard to answer this thread. I'm personally a big fan of Thergothon, but I have a feeling you might not dig their sound.

Neurosis, Torche, and Isis came to mind for me as well. You'll probably have the best luck in sludge and post-metal, since doom and drone are often instrumental. Sludge seems partial to screamed and yelled vocals that are devoid of death grunts and black metal shrieks.

I need to listen to Kylesa more, but I've always liked both of their vocalists, particularly Laura's part on this track.

^Excellent use of vocals here, seems a lot more effective than straight up death grunts.

I recommend Boris above all else. They bounce between a lot of styles (sludge, doom, drone, stoner, etc) yet the vocals stay straightforward and consistent. Oh and in Japanese.

This one is quite shoe-gazy, probably closer to something like Jesu.
