Examples of Unexpected Genre-Mixing That You Ended Up Enjoying

Ok, so, one of my favorite songs of the past 10-15 years is very unexpected

Afro Celt Sound System-Colossus

In the simplest terms, its a mixture of Afro-rhythmic structures, traditional Celtic instrumentalists, 90s breakbeats, ambient soundscapes, and occasionally a visit from oh, I dunno, PETER FUCKING GABRIEL

this is much more straightforward "ethnopop" tahn Colossus.

Whereas I ended up absolutely despising most of this group's output, Colossus really did (and still does) a number on me. I can't help but think that track is badass and immensely creative every time I hear it...its like they conquered the stigma of "world music plus electronics equals new age music".

Do you agree WATMM? What are some experiences of genre-mixing that you never thought would work, yet, were incredibly surprised and impressed with?

Electronic music with sampled didgeridoo....

Some of the songs are downright cheesy but I liked them just the same..

Edit:

not to be confused with the techno/trance artist of the same name..

i would also add that a huge guilty pleasure of mine is early Dropkick Murphys material. Plz don't flame me, I was an impressionable young punker when Do or Die came out, and to even listen to someone match up Cadence to Arms with a Punk beat blew my young mind. It

's too bad they suck horrible amounts of spewing ass now.

Did anyone mention the very brief greatness that was Kinky?

RE the Kinky example... I like that. Why was it so short lived?
