So I just received a call from India or some such place. The guy said my computer was running slowly and he cold help me fix it. So I played along interested to hear what he was trying. he got me to open the run window and wanted me to type "inf hidden files". I didnt of course but what was he trying to achieve? I put the phone down and he rang back. very weird.

i'm running all my scans now obv

this is very common lately, typically they'll get you to delete a subdir within windows where "the viruses are" and then try and get you to download "clean" replacements from their site. if you do, congrats, your bank account is empty and you are probably part of a botnet.

Had this with a few clients where a guy has called their home number saying they're from Microsoft support and have detected problems on your machine. Usually they get you to give them access remotely, then they have free reign to do what they like, take info, install stuff. Whatever.

Did he get access to the machine? If not you probably don't have anything to worry about.

sounds like the phone version of scareware (which I got infected by yesterday on my laptop, but immediately killed it as it happened to me once before). I was being an idiot, and had AVG and my Firewall disabled, and that shit got me IMMEDIATELY. I think it came from a blog, too. Not sure. But yeah...so infuriating.

incredible thanks. the fact that this works amazes me

I believe there is a phone call on youtube where these people accidentally called some UK IT guys. If it wasn't this exact scam, it was something very similar. Any how, the IT guys toyed with him for a while before shoving it in his face.
